Great friendships forged by letters

The two male protagonists of the whole film, and nearly half of their rival dramas are established through letters, and on the basis of a large number of letters, there is a touching story behind. In fact, there are not many face-to-face rivalries between them, but it is more brilliant than the content of their correspondence. It is worthy of the collision of the two Oscar-winning actors.

Many of the words they said after their first meeting were not translated or annotated in the subtitles, and of course they didn't mean to blame the subtitle team. It's just a pity that as a non-native English-speaking country, it's hard to get the spark of wisdom behind those conversations between two wise people. They did a great job, but I just don't understand it.

Near the end of the film, the professor's wife said to the professor, "If you see that Alesha has forgiven William in his eyes, you must go and help William." This sentence alone brought out the three most touching pairs of characters in the whole film, and sublimated the audience's (me) emotions to the highest point.

This is an excellent work that deserves to be read over and over again. It also makes people more respectful of the lexicographers and their hard work. Finally, I would like to thank the Undisputed Film Group for organizing the activities.

Originally read in 2014. From "Let us begin at aardvark and never stop until we reach zymurgy" to "Sometimes when we push away, that is when we most needed to be resisted". If love...then what? To have someone to share that ecstasy found in words. Now I know what awaits me.

From the "Dictionary" and "The Book of the Boat" to this OED editor "Legend", I really have no resistance to this movie. Behind the turmoil of the great era, the dictionaries loaded with national traditions are no longer shelved, penetrating the nostalgia of generations, and spanning historical time and space. Will we still be touched by a piece of sweet fragrance? Of course, what is intensively presented on the screen are those editors who have been forgotten or even unknown. Their bright heads and perseverance, resistance or silence, in today’s context are more like an interpretation of the "old world" civilization. The lyrical elegy that is spread by the fire, the tune is always revolving with the phrase "It lives on". I couldn't help thinking of Lu Lao Shenxian and the "English-Chinese Dictionary", as well as the dictionary editors who raced against time day and night.

The Professor and the Madman quotes

  • James Murray: Who's she?

Dr. William Chester Minor: The impossible.

James Murray: The more impossible, the greater the love.

Dr. William Chester Minor: Do you truly believe that? My heart is so sick.

James Murray: Well... what I know of love is that the sickness often becomes the cure.

  • Ada Murray: Sometimes when we push away, that is when we most need to be resisted.
