Classic aftertaste

War is an adult thing but war also destroys the hearts of children.

Laota's debut work, but it has already shown the beauty of the poetic lens. Through the interspersed dream and reality, we see an innocent Ivan who yearns for a family, but the war in reality makes him cruel and full of hatred.

The images of water wells, heavy rain, sea surface, war horses and other objects that appeared in several dreams are metaphors for the beautiful yearning in Ivan's heart and his thoughts about his mother and sister.

At the end of the film, a combination of empty head and voice-over is used to truly reproduce the tragic scene of Ivan being hanged. The dream that followed extended Ivan's life, and the carefree figure running on the seashore was in stark contrast to the tragic ending in reality, and further highlighted the cruelty and sadness of the war.

The maiden work of the old tower, an art classic worthy of aftertaste.

"Dear Martha, don't cross that river." The first shot that panned straight up happened to form a closed loop with the last shot of "Sacrifice." The existence of too sweet dreams surpassed the existence of little heroes with strong anti-war intentions. If it hadn't benefited from Khrushchev's short thawing period, Tarkovsky might have gone another way, or there would be no way to go.

① In the 3rd dream, Ivan's child image is highlighted under the image of his mother. After waking up, the cruel war reality beat him back to the image of a "warrior". The contrast between the dream and reality is strong. ② The imaginary battle in the dark ③ After the victory of the war, The time and space echo of the ruins of the prison induces the audience to imagine the infinite beautiful scene at the end, mother, partner, beach, sea water, sunshine. The marshland scene is great.

Ivan's Childhood quotes

  • Ivan's Mother: If a well is really deep, you can see a star down there even in the middle of a sunny day.

  • Ivan: Is he a Fritz too?

Galtsev: He's either a German doctor or writer.

Ivan: They have no writers. I saw them burning books in a square. They poured gasoline on them and set them on fire. There was soot in the air for a week.

Galtsev: That writer lived 400 years ago.

    Ivan: Well, then maybe.
