A non-documentary biopic

A hot air balloon adventure for the "Hawking" couple. The large-scale high-altitude overlook, the field of vision is wide and magnificent. The rain, fog and frost in the air, and the flying of butterflies are all vividly made, and the cinema has a good look and feel.

The script is very neat and traditional British style, the main line is the real hot air balloon process, the time and space coordinates displayed on the screen from time to time can easily bring the audience into the situation, and flashbacks are inserted from time to time to enrich the narrative structure.

The stars twinkle overhead and the sky is full of temptation, but as the hot air balloon continues to rise, danger ensues. The film is adapted from real history. In the absence of safety protection at the time, the two finally reached the flying height of a civil aircraft. The thrilling can be imagined. The exploration and sacrifice of scientists for the well-being of mankind is admirable.

But I don’t know if it is to meet the market demand, it is obviously a flying adventure carried out by two male scientists in their 50s in the 19th century. The most dangerous moment was when the heroine bravely climbed onto the balloon and stood majestically at the top of the sky, while the hero was already unconscious. Even now that women's rights are in power, this kind of tampering is ashamed of the warriors who risked their lives at that time.

In addition, the performance of Little Freckles has fallen into a stereotype, and it always looks like a gully and clumsy expression. The costumes are also very similar, and they can play Fantastic Beasts or Hawking at any time.

The color pictures are pretty good, and the visual aspect is definitely impressive. Several scenes are extremely thrilling, especially the part of climbing the balloon with bare hands while frightening, while sweating for the heroine. In addition, the period between butterflies and stars gives people a romantic feeling. I thought the film would use this to draw the emotional drama of the male and female protagonists, but in the end it didn't. This is very positive. Other than that, there are no surprises in the film. The simplicity of the story, coupled with multiple flashbacks, makes the film a bit boring. Overall, quite satisfactory.

The five-kilometer butterfly, the seven-kilometer star, the eleven-kilometer balloon top... Putting it in the context of science fiction, this is an exploration of boundaries, just like the themes of many of Ted Jiang’s novels. I think such novels are really prone to poetry.
