he's not there

Abbas is a movie minimalist. He does not have an overly strong desire to express himself. In other words, he made a choice and wrote a complete background story for the characters in his heart, but he did not declare it in his mouth, but in his actions. A man decides to end his life, he needs someone to help him bury his traces, so that he will not be exposed to the wilderness and will not be disturbed by others. He drives a Land Rover, owns his own house, has a lot of experience and talks well, but is so lonely and desperate. The audience can guess what happened to this man, maybe it was a woman who didn't show up, maybe it was the son talked about in the conversation, maybe it was the war-torn era, maybe it was a shaken belief. Desolate mountain roads, rumbling bulldozers, sparsely-traveled and charming trails, Abbas is undoubtedly a master of atmosphere. He did not use music to manipulate the audience's emotions, but let people explore on their own. Deep jazz that pulls you out of the dramatic conflict into life. In a way, this is also a road movie, except that instead of looking for a way out or an answer, the protagonist is heading towards a planned ending. Maybe he's been on the road for so long, maybe he's had similar conversations with so many people that he already has his own conversation strategy for different people. The young soldier is not yet deep in the world, with the simplicity and shyness of the peasant children, and the man stimulates him with courage. Seminary students have certain experience and firm beliefs, so he expounds God's will from different angles. In these two main conversations, men dominated the process by virtue of their qualifications and experience. The screen is subtly switched, and the third passenger is an elder who is wiser than the man. Instead, the man becomes the listener and begins to hesitate and hesitate. It is hard to imagine that the main characters are not professional actors, and many of the two sides of the dialogue are not present at the same time, and they are connected by patient editing. As if the director didn't do much, and without Abbas, there would be no "Taste of Cherry".

CC rewatch, minus one star. The Palme d'Or should be compensated for the close-up.

Really good movie. The car window = the screen frame, the character's eye = the camera lens, it is a circular structure and an installation art. The ending turned out really well. The mk2DVD contains Mr. Fu Dong's introduction and three comments, as well as an interview with Abbas.

Taste of Cherry quotes

  • Mr. Bagheri: Some things are easier to do than to say.

  • Mr. Badii: I've decided to free myself from this life.

    The seminarian: What for?

Mr. Badii: It wouldn't help you to know and I can't talk about it and you wouldn't understand. It's not because you don't understand but you can't feel what I feel. You can sympathize, understand, show compassion. But feel my pain? No. You suffer and so do I. I understand you. You comprehend my pain, but you can't feel it
