I don't know if this film has the style of leading a Hong Kong gangster film. Its values are astounding, and it a bit over-beautifies the image of the members of the gangster. But the close brotherhood among them reminds me of the book "Taiping Heavenly Kingdom" I was reading recently. Woo Yusen and Tsui Hark are both Cantonese, and Tsui Hark is a native of Haifeng County, a place with strong folk customs. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom also originated from Guangdong and Guangxi. Hong Xiuquan's hometown Huaxian is only a few dozen kilometers away from Guangzhou. Today, Hong Kong and Guangdong naturally have a sound legal system, but their degree of freedom, openness, compatibility and flexibility is still unmatched by other provinces in China. And the struggle for personal interests and rights is more than anywhere else. Perhaps a sturdy people and enough contacts with the West make it easier to give birth to a revolution.
