In Chinese, these four characters are absolutely derogatory words, which are symbols of unchaste women. The film is named after these four words, which also seems to contain irony. Before watching the movie, I thought this film was about a woman's sexual indulgence. After watching it, I found that watching a movie can't just read the name of the movie.
The style of this film is witty and humorous, which makes it easy and enjoyable to watch. It can be regarded as an excellent comedy. But this film seems to be more than just a comedy, it's not just a light-hearted thing, it still has its ideological theme. The film is concise and clear. Leaving aside the elements of comedy, from the perspective of plot alone, the film undoubtedly tells about the liberation of women in Lalita's era and her yearning for freedom. She yearns for pure, ideal and extreme love. When the environment cannot provide her with these, she will choose to leave.
At the beginning of the film, we see a slightly old castle standing alone in the English countryside (they are more beautiful than our parks). Around her, there are vast lawns, quiet lakes, clear blue sky, and lush trees. Apart from telling us that this place is beautiful, it also implies that it has not been infiltrated by modern industrial society and maintains ancient traditions. It also foreshadows the conservative concept of the people in the castle. When the camera enters the interior of the castle, the family chats and laughs, it is very lively, the father, mother, eldest daughter, little daughter, talking about all aspects of daily life, the servants are also working hard, everything is so harmonious. But the peaceful life has to be broken, otherwise there will be no highlights, so they receive a letter that their son John will be back soon, and they are married outside, they are surprised, obviously do not know. From John's letter, they felt that John's wife could not satisfy them, and they called the daughter-in-law, who had not yet entered their house, "bitch". Seeing this, we have expectations, and I believe that any audience will have a hunch that a quarrel is inevitable.
However, we don't see an argument, and John and her wife get into the castle smoothly, although the mother doesn't show the enthusiasm she should have. At home, John and Lalita began to live with their family, but the American Lalita was clearly not well suited to the rural English lifestyle, she disliked their food and often disagreed with John's family. Rather than being too individualistic in this conservative family, it's more that American culture is very different from British culture. Lalita clearly represents the open, free and unfettered modern American civilization, and John's family, except for his father, symbolizes the conservative and outdated cultural mentality of Britain, with a kind of attitude towards anything new. The attitude of long-distance care and the mentality of exclusion to the outside culture, even if the foreign culture is more advanced than their own. Lalita is deeply in love with John, but she cannot accept his family's mindset. In a long time together, she found that John's father Victor had a common language with her. Victor used to be a soldier in the British army and fought in wars abroad. Because of his rich experience, he can look at the world with a transcendental mentality and face the world with a cosmopolitan open eye. Therefore, when other people regard Lalita as an alternative, he always does not conform to them. On the one hand, he cannot fall out with his family, and on the other hand, he also knows that he cannot convince the family because of their limited vision.
When we lived together, Lalita performed "farce" again and again. Sister John took her "Sodoma and Gomorrah: A Biblical Story" to read. Her mother-in-law thought it was a lewd book and rebuked Lalita for not wanting it in the future. Poisoning her own daughter; Lalita accidentally crushed her mother-in-law's pet dog to death, but had no choice but to bury it secretly, but was found out; promised to ride a horse and hunt with her mother-in-law, but rushed out of the horses on a motorcycle, making her mother-in-law big Eye-catching; she performed with little sister John at the party, but her random jokes made little sister take it seriously, staged a scandal, and she was disliked by her mother-in-law and sister-in-law; she was enjoying fish and water with John in the warehouse, but her mother-in-law's Everyone bumped into each other, she thought they were husband and wife, and there was nothing to be ashamed of, but her mother-in-law was unbearable, it seemed that she had thrown away eight times the face of her ancestors... After Lalita arrived, everything seemed to have changed.
Lalita thought John could hold on to true love like she did, but John let her down. John disapproved of her taking her ex-husband's life by hand, but Lalita thought it was out of love, in order to prevent her husband from continuing to suffer. At the same time, John couldn't leave the house with Larita in order to accept the family property. He couldn't do it, and he felt that it was his responsibility to the family. So Lalita has no reason to live anymore, she wants to leave, leave alone, to pursue her own freedom. John was reluctant to let her go, but Lalita told him "You don't know what love is, you don't understand what it's like to love someone so deeply and to do everything for them. Even injecting them with poison, because they are too weak to do it themselves, I don't believe you can love me like that." Lalita's meaning is very clear, since she can't give up her family property for me, she can't give me true love.
Before leaving the castle, Lalita knocked down the statue of Venus with a broken arm at the door. In her heart, they did not understand the real love. The statue of Eros was just a decoration for them. She wanted to smash their hypocrisy. decorate. When she walked out of the castle, she felt very relaxed, she gave her true love, she had no regrets, and when she left those worldly people, she felt that her spirit had been sublimated. She got in the car and was about to leave, but Victor got in the car and wanted to leave this suffocating home with her, and he finally found a bosom friend. In the eyes of the secular people, this is simply incest. The father-in-law and the daughter-in-law eloped, what kind of decency. However, the movie responds to our question so strongly. This is true freedom and true love!

Larita Whittaker: Oh, come now John, I'm sure Marion can appreciate the pain of watching a loved one slip through her fingers.

  • Mrs. Whittaker: Is it true you've had as many lovers as they say?

Larita Whittaker: [gets up from the dinner table] Of course it's not true, Mrs. Whitaker. Hardly any of them actually loved me.
