the outermost house

"We need another, more sensible, and more mysterious conception of animals. A civilized man who lives away from nature and relies on complex techniques to look at animals through the knowledge he possesses, with his discolored eyes. He sees only An exaggerated feather, and a distorted picture. If we think animals are less complete than humans, or because they are physically less beautiful than humans, then we are very wrong. We cannot measure animals with human scales. In a world older and more complete than our human society, they are sophisticated and well-developed. They are born with super senses that we humans have lost or never had, and survive on a sound that our human ears cannot catch. They are not of our race but not of us, they belong to another kingdom, but are trapped in the web of life and time together with human beings, and experience the glory and suffering of the earth together."

Earthlings quotes

  • [first lines]

title card: earth-ling n. - One who inhabits the earth.

Narrator: Since we all inhabit the earth, we are all considered earthlings. There is no sexism, racism, or speciesism in the term 'earthling'. It encompasses each and every one of us: warm- or cold-blooded, mammal, vertebrate or invertebrate, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish and human alike.

  • Narrator: It is the human earthling who tends to dominate the earth, oftentimes treating other fellow earthlings and living beings as mere objects. This is what is meant by 'speciesism'. By analogy with racism and sexism, speciesism is a prejudice or attitude or bias in favor of the interests of the members of one's own species and against those of members of other species.
