As someone who will live in Chicago in the past year, now, and the next year, watching this movie will feel more strange.
?First of all, the description of Chicago's law and order is not too exaggerated, it is basically true.
(I didn't pay much attention to the specific year of the story, but it is still the city with the highest crime rate in the United States) Just enter "Chicago", "crime" and "map" in Google, and various versions of the crime rate will appear. The statistical map is roughly as follows. The darker the red, the higher the crime rate, while the green is the opposite.
The place where the story happened, the doctor's family lived in Evenston (Evanston, the red star in the picture below), in fact, it is no longer Chicago, 19 kilometers away from downtown Chicago, there is the main campus of Northwestern University in the United States. This area is one of the areas with the highest concentration of wealthy people and the highest safety factor around Chicago.
The place where the doctor works is called "Rush University Medical Center" in reality. It is located in the "Near West Side" area of downtown Chicago (the green star in the picture below). It is also quite safe. Generally, you are not worried about danger on the street when you travel.
But goose, lz lives, hehe, Hyde Park, "Hyde Park" (the yellow star in the picture below), if you look closely, you can find a small patch of pink among the crimson south of Chicago. Yes, that’s Hyde Park. The reason why it is pink rather than crimson is because it is the campus of the University of Chicago, with an astonishing number of campus police and alarm posts, so that the area around the university can barely be maintained at a not particularly high level of crime.
The picture below shows the crime statistics of Evanston (the home of the doctor in the movie) on the Chicago Crime Report website in the last week. I only chose some options such as assault, gun attack, robbery, burglary, theft, and sexual harassment. ? Secondly, what is the experience of living in this crimson?
The most conspicuous is that there is an emergency alarm device less than every 50 meters. When freshmen enter the school, the school will notify you by email. According to the location of the emergency alarm device, choose and memorize a route home with the most alarm devices along the road. Fortunately, I never had the opportunity to press that red alarm button.
Around the campus during the day, you will see a lot of Chicago campus police. Their police car looks different from the Chicago police car. The uncles and aunts of the nuclear bomb police would appear at any time in the cafeteria of the school library coffee shop. Seeing them wearing bulletproof vests, they always don't know whether they feel safe or dangerous.
After dark, try to avoid going out alone, regardless of male or female. Don’t walk either. If you can drive, you can use Uber if you don’t have a car. If you don’t have Uber, you can also choose to take a free school bus. There are several different routes, such as southeast, northwest, etc., and there is always one that can get to where you live.
After living in Hyde Park for a year, daily activities are carried out during the day. Therefore, I hardly know what the area where I live will look like after dark. The most unacceptable thing is that sometimes I don't want to stay at home at night or go to the city center. I just want to go for a walk and take a stroll to buy some snacks, which is completely unattainable. You know, it’s a 10-minute walk from my house to Lake Michigan. If this is changed in China, the people who walk in the shade by the lake in the summer evening must be shoulder to shoulder.
All in all, Chicago (if you live in a safe area) is still a beautiful, large and modern American city.
As for other areas, (such as the crimson area from my home to the city center), I sometimes wonder if it really looks like the movie. Once or twice, because of high-speed traffic jams, you have to go around and take a car to pass through one of the areas. What you can see is rundown and depression. The violence and crime hidden behind you can't be seen on the street during the day.
