After reading the difference between the script and the finished film posted by netizens, I felt that Director Hou's choice was right.

The script has at least three lines (loneliness, politics, Gong Wei), and if you add the mirror-wearing youth, there are four lines. It's not that you can't shoot like this, but if you're not careful, you can get into a situation where the rhythm is messed up or too tacky.
The released version has a lonely main line and a palace auxiliary line, all in one go, with outstanding temperament, throwing it on the ground and smashing the solidity of Mars.
To say that the rhythm is slow, I think it is the active pursuit of these new wave directors in Taiwan. This style sifts people, and it is sifted by the times. But because of the slow pace, I don't agree that it's a bad movie.
In addition to disagreeing with the reason for the pursuit of the style of the work, there is another reason to be mentioned later.

In my opinion, this movie is called the assassin Nie Yinniang, and it mainly talks about Nie Yinniang's loneliness.
What loneliness is, is the failure to communicate with others.
Her identity determines her loneliness. When an assassin receives a mission, he is obedient and has nothing to say. To perform a mission is to be unknown or not to make a sound. The attempt to communicate with the target is the fatal blow, which can only be issued once. . And Nie Yinniang is an excellent assassin.
But she is still trying to communicate with the people she loves. She tried to attract Rooku again and again, but she did not kill him again and again. This was not just an expression of love, it was her attempt to communicate. She is no longer good at speaking with words. But Rokuro shot at her again and again. Communication failed.
Times and fate created her loneliness. Yao Qi did not choose to be the killer Nie Yinniang by herself. The An-Shi Rebellion and the separation of the feudal towns, the marriage of the princess and the warlord, have nothing to do with her; who her cousin is, the behavior of her relatives, and the thoughts of her master were also a foregone conclusion long before she was born.
Nie Yinniang's cousin and her once made a marriage contract, and they may have made up their minds to each other. At least she did. But she went up the mountain for them, and when she came back down the mountain, she saw Qi Renzhifu's cousin, the cousin who believed she was going to kill him. Could her words be more powerful than her actions? Communication failed completely.
Nie Yinniang's parents said she was going to make a decision and said she shouldn't be sent up the mountain. How did she respond? What can she say to her parents? At this time, she had cut off all contact with the human world and became a ghost.
The wish is not fulfilled and cannot die, and the lonely soul who wants to reach out but dare not spy on the world.
As other film reviewers have pointed out, so many long shots were seen through Nie Yinniang's eyes. Those conflicts and quarrels, intimacy and consolation, the changing clouds in the sky, and the reflections of the trees on the water are all shots that describe what Nie Yinniang saw in the eyes of the lonely soul.
People who have been alone know how slow and long the loneliness is. This is the second reason I think the slow pace of this movie is the right shot.
Nie Yinniang, a lonely soul, felt understood for the first time in the Jiedushi Mansion. It was Butterfly who said, "It's uncomfortable for Yao Qi." The peeping through the gauze curtain for an unknown period of time finally became an obstacle at this moment.
Watching Nie Yinniang wandering silently, slowly and carefully stepping over the butterflies on the ground, I suddenly felt a strong emotional impact. For me, with the feeling of this moment, this movie is worth watching, worth watching.
With a trace of popularity, Nie Yinniang really felt understood and understood after meeting the mirror-grinding youth, and began to slowly walk out of loneliness, returning to the human world from the world of ghosts. The script mentions that the youth and Yinniang do not understand the language. This irony is not emphasized in the finished film. Whether it is good or not, I can't answer it now. But when I saw the scene where the mirror-grinding youth helped Nie Yinniang heal her wounds, I felt like this is enough now.
Just like how far Nie Yinniang walked, it was not enough. You must hear the ending song to end the experience.
