overture

One bright morning, the sea and the wind whispered. The trees surrounded the small white buildings. An ordinary morning in Greece.
The two little boys were also whispering: "Alexander, do you want to go to the island?"
"The island?"
"We're going to dive, visit the ancient capital, then climb the cliff and yell at passing ships."
"Do you know the ancient capital? "
Grandpa said it was prosperous at first, but then it sank due to an earthquake and slept at the bottom of the sea for centuries. When the morning star misses the earth and stops turning, it will float to the surface and just drop down, then everything will stop, including time."
"What? Is it time?"
"Grandpa said it was a child playing with sandbags at the beach. Are you coming?" The
music played, and the gentle melody returned to and fro in a subtle way. Like time and eternity at play. The little boy got up from the bed, carried his shoes and tiptoed downstairs. The three little playmates jumped into the sea and swam to the mysterious ancient capital.
Time flies, little Alexander grows up, gets old, his wife dies, his mother loses his memory, and his daughter and son-in-law want to sell the house full of memories. The only connection he has with the world is the stranger on the opposite side, who responds to him with the same song, the white curtain fluttering in the wind.
Orania accompanied him for three years, and on the last day, he had to walk alone. He led the puppy and walked on the beach, the vast sea was gray. Who is that stranger? Maybe he's lonely too, maybe he's a little girl playing with the unknown before going to school, it's better to imagine than to know.
"It all happened so fast, suspiciously painful, he insisted on knowing what was going on, and then the darkness...the silence, the silence..." The
sky suddenly revealed the shadowy silhouette of the ship, and the lover in Walking by the water at sunset, everything tells the end of winter, the false promise of spring, everything tells the end of winter...
The ship's bells began to ring, and the seagulls cut through the silence of the sky. "Anna, my only regret, is it the only one? It's that I didn't accomplish anything, and the chance to continue the poem has no progress, only fragmentary words." The bell rang again, was it the bell of the boat row, or the bell of the church?

Revisit this inner free, heavy poem. Metaphysical thinking and torture, perhaps from the moment we left the Garden of Eden, we have lost the ability to answer the ultimate question, and the seeds of nostalgia are sown. I just learned today that Angelopoulos died in a car accident half a month ago. Watching this movie, I miss him and pay tribute to myself.

"What is time? Time is a little boy playing sandbags on the coast." This analogy is really good. Time is not malicious, no matter how long or short, neither the port nor the wider world can answer the questions I asked my mother when I was a child. Loneliness is an excuse for not being invested enough, forever or just one day.

Eternity and a Day quotes

  • Alexandre: I know that one you will leave. The wind pushes your eyes away but today give me this day as if it was the last.

  • Alexandre: Why, mother, nothing happens as we wish? Why? Why does one have to rot in silence torn between pain and desire? Why did I live my life in exile. Tell me mother, why can't one learn to love?
