Can't become his own chameleon

In the middle of the film, when Zelig was mixed in the German army, I silently thought that it would be happy to be a chameleon like Zelig.
You can be loved because you are the same as them. Anyone looking at you is like looking at you reflected in a flat mirror, with the same figure and clothing, the same way of speaking, the same party and nation, the same ability and incompetence. They like you as much as they like themselves. Because you are their shadow.
You can offload the burden of responsibility. You face different people with different personalities. When you are tired or scared or at a loss, you can escape in another identity at any time. No one recognizes you. Naturally, no one is chasing you to accompany the money for repairing the car, apologizing for delivering babies with ice cubes, and raising your children. Escape is the easiest thing, and the mixed technique of not being caught makes you invincible.
You can fall into the happy collective unconscious. You confuse the crowd and lose your face and freedom, but you are almost actively embracing this life of freedom from choice. Hitler thinks and speaks on behalf of everyone, so you don’t need to express opinions and it won’t cause disputes; people put on the same face and do the same thing, so you don’t have to worry about making mistakes and you don’t have to be independent. You are the other person, even if the other person is hell.
So, in order to be loved, relieved of responsibility, and free from the burden of thinking, you become an out-and-out chameleon, interacting with the environment but forgetting what color you should be. However, don’t you get enough? Isn't it the best choice to abandon your perilous self in the face of safety and happiness?
But the
chameleon is not Monkey King. He is ever-changing but unable to become himself, and it is impossible for a person who does not know "who I am" to say "I love you". When Zelig secretly threw the unpalatable crackers into the trash can, he also delineated himself. This process began when Dr. Fletcher changed roles, forced him to face his lies, forced him to resolve the panic that he couldn't integrate into the group, and forced him to face his own thoughts.
If Zelig's first resuscitation was not just a medicine for love, then the second awakening was much more straightforward. The chameleon loses itself and becomes chaotic under the pressure of society, but chaotic people are not allowed to exist in love. Self is an absolute question. You can have self, you can have no self, but you cannot have a little self. When the dangerous love and the chaos of safety are on the tray, the balance of chameleon's psychology tends to love.
Facing a gentle and intellectual female doctor, owning oneself is the basis for Zelig to have love; and at Hitler's meeting, it was precisely the awakening love that helped him find himself. In the square with one thousand people, even normal people were hypnotized by passionate speeches, but Zelig waved his arms desperately at the first sight of his lover, marking his unique self in the crowd.
Because life without self is like ice cream without a crispy tube, just a cloud of cream with an unclear outline.
In my eyes, this romantic scene is a mess.

Zelig quotes

  • Leonard Zelig: And to the, to the gentleman who's appendix I took out, I... I'm, I don't know what to say, if it's any consolation I... I may still have it somewhere around the house.

  • Leonard Zelig: [in a hypnotic trance] My brother beat me. My sister beat my brother. My father beat my sister and my brother and me. My mother beat my father and my sister and me and my brother. The neighbors beat our family. The people down the block beat the neighbors and our family.
