The story written by the director/screenwriter John Patrick Shanley has always been a little weird. This is a ridiculous, fantasy, "quirky", "whimsical" story, but the director has used many very old-fashioned lens language and expression techniques, such as the scenes of passing the sea with string music. Moreover, the director's ability to control is very limited. Like the passage on the island, the comedy of the idea of "Jewish natives" was not filmed, and it was naive, clichéd, and stupid. It was the performance of the chief actor Abe Vigoda (the traitor Tessio in the first part of The Godfather) that made the entire passage less horrible.
There is also a problem with the choice. This movie can be cut for at least ten minutes. For example, the scene of drifting at sea, the scene of fishing, and the scene of buying clothes in Manhattan are all too much writing.
Music matching is also very problematic. Part of the soundtrack is blues and 60s rock, but some of the soundtrack is synthesizer music and orchestral music made by French film composer Georges Delerue.
