Merry Christmas

"Merry Christmas" describes the battlefield of the First World War, where the British and French and German forces confronted each other in their trenches on Christmas Eve. A burst of Christmas music evoked harmony between the two parties. In the end, the two sides agreed to a truce during Christmas, and the military priest held a midnight mass for everyone. The two parties not only sang and made fun, exchanged food and wine, and even played football together. After Christmas, the war should have started again, but everyone couldn't bear to open fire at the other side. Finally, the upper hand knew about it and ordered the soldiers on this battlefield to be punished.

The description of religion in the movie is thought-provoking. An English priest instilled a concept similar to jihad to believers during Mass. He misinterpreted and extended Jesus' words about the sword, and concluded that he was going to kill all the Germans; of course, his subordinates That is, the pastor who presided over Christmas Mass for both parties on that happy battlefield completely disagreed with him. At the end, he even handed back the cross on his body to show a break with such a church. On the battlefield, all soldiers can understand and sing when they hear Christmas songs. Christianity seems to be the common language of all Europe; but in war, ambitious people can arbitrarily misinterpret the doctrine and incite the people to fight. The soldiers' natural belief in peace and anti-war was triggered in the most basic Christmas song...

The right and wrong of the two sides in World War I were not as clear to the Chinese as in World War II. But, in any case, mass killings will never be right, right?

An alternative war movie that feels a bit familiar. The tone of the whole play is very similar to a Christmas carol, it is peaceful and peaceful, and the main melody is too heavy.

Joyeux Noel quotes

  • Ponchel: [watching Horstmayer and Gordon shake hands] A summit meeting, and we're not even invited.

  • Horstmayer: I heard last night about your wife. If you like, I can get a letter through to her.

Lieutenant Audebert: Why would you do that? If you got caught...

Horstmayer: [scoffs] One letter won't stop us winning the war. And anyhow, when we'll have taken Paris and it's over, you can invite us for a drink in Rue Vavin.

Lieutenant Audebert: You don't have to invade Paris to drop round for a drink.
