The subtleties of details

I wrote this review a long time later, I didn't plan to write it for long, but because the long-awaited comment from others has never appeared, I had to fill in a little detailed analysis of the characters in the play in a hurry.

James Ashford is an amazing character. Of course, I proposed this role not because I personally love Tom Felto, an actor with a cute face, but because this role subtly reflects a qualified emotional entanglement.

I thought that IMDB would give an analysis, so when I was looking at other sites, I tried my best to find out if there is any explanation for the relationship between Belle and James. However, no one raised this possibility.

That is that James may not only despise Belle, but also the subtle emotions that attract the two sexes.

I feel it is even very obvious. In that scene, the moment he grabbed Belle's face and ran his fingers across her lips, James' expression became harsh and complicated. He desires Belle, but this desire is equivalent to his contempt for Belle. And feeling indignant and irritated about my desire for Belle.

It is impossible for him to accept such a girl anyway. So he tried his best to despise her, but he was always attracted by her. Feelings should be based on mutual respect and love, but his feelings tend to be animal desires. It is unreasonable that this kind of sentiment that is obviously contrary to the superficial civilization has occurred. However, even if this was unreasonable, he would probably attribute it to Belle naturally, thinking it was her fault.

I don't know if this was done deliberately, or if it was just my own random thinking. But if this detail is true, it will not have any strange effects on the whole drama. On the contrary, the emotional scene has an interesting development direction.

Belle quotes

  • Oliver Ashford: [referring to Dido Elizabeth Belle] She is intriguing, is she not?

James Ashford: [staring contemptuously at Dido] I find her repulsive.

Oliver Ashford: Well, I suppose she is... if you find a most rare and exotic flower so.

James Ashford: [contemptuously] One does not make a wife of the the rare and exotic, Oliver. One samples it on the cotton fields of the Indies.

Oliver Ashford: [chuckles] Why so far when it is right at my door?

James Ashford: Then find a pure English rose to decorate one's home.

  • Lady Ashford: You will refrain from any intercourse with the negro. Lord and Lady Mansfield may find it fascinating to have a Lady Mulatto running around in their house, but I will not have one running around in mine.

Oliver Ashford: She is an heiress.

Lady Ashford: Although exceptions can be made.

Oliver Ashford: It is said that her father left her a rather vast fortune.

Lady Ashford: I mean to say, if that is your inclination.

Oliver Ashford: She is rather soft on the eye. I have thought no further of it, Mama.

Lady Ashford: Where do you get your information?

Oliver Ashford: Her sister-cousin has a rather fast tongue.
