Night and fog

Looking at this short film documenting the Auschwitz concentration camp by Alan Renai again, I was still quite shocked. I used a colorful empty lens to document the deserted ruins, and I used a black and white lens to examine the shocking Nazis in Auschwitz. Crime, 9 million were slaughtered... And the sentence "It's not my fault" from the prisoner head and the SS tortured the war responsibility of the slaughter. Whose fault was that? If the answer is always vague, then as Renai said, do we "pretend that war will only happen once in one place, pretend not to hear the constant cry of human beings", we are anti-war, peace, unity, self-improvement... …, did you find the crux?

Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day. After the commemorative ceremony held at the University of Haifa, they released this documentary. They have always been reluctant to touch books or movies on this subject. This is the first time to see the real picture without numbers and words. Yet how could it be possible to imagine the full picture? I had to light a candle and sing softly this sentimental national anthem with everyone and finally walked back to school in the spring breeze of the night

"When these images are past, we pretend to be hopeful again, as if the suffering is healed, we pretend it will only happen once at a certain time and place, we pretend to be invisible to the things around us, to the never-ending cry of humanity turn a deaf ear."

Night and Fog quotes

  • Récitant/Narrator: Grass flourishes on the inspection ground around the blocks. An abandoned village, still heavy with peril. The crematoria are no longer used. The Nazi's cunning is but child's play today. Nine million dead haunt this countryside.

  • Récitant/Narrator: Who among us keeps watch over this strange watchtower to warn the arrival of our new executioners? Are their faces really different from our own?
