Keep silent about humanity

After reading it, I had mixed feelings. I didn't hate and condemn these murderous demons, but felt sad for human nature.

Some of the people interviewed were the murderers of the year, some were accomplices of the year, and some were family members of the murderers. However, in the face of the silent condemnation of the victim's family back then, almost no one had any remorse for the massacre. Everyone reached a tacit agreement, and the past events were over. An interviewee still threatens, if you don’t let the past pass, the massacre will happen again.

In the face of these murderers who evade trial and find excuses for their sins, it is not hatred. Just like the title of the film, I just want to remain silent. Just like Adi, his silent examination has made the criminals of the year uneasy.

The past is over, and I have heard this passage from people who have hurt me. Of course the person who hurts others thinks that the past can pass, but what about the hurt person? The past is over, live an optimistic life, don't stay in the past. Whoever hears this kind of poisonous chicken soup does not think it is absurd?

It is naive to try to make people who have no conscience repent. Adi interviewed people related to this massacre in the past, and their feedback on the events of the year truly reflects the selfishness of human nature. So why does the law need to exist? Why is violence needed? The legality of coercion and violence may gain some understanding here.

However, I want to ask again: What is good? What is evil? From different angles, a story can turn out different tricks. There are countless cruel things in human history, and this massacre is just one of many evils. How to avoid this kind of thing from happening in our own nation and country is what we should think about.

Instead of emphasizing the incident, it uses the records of a family to go deep into people's current psychological state. This documentary is more like a movie than "Deduction of Killing", and it is not deliberately formalized but based on the film language and shooting methods. Strengthening the interpretability and sensuality of the truth, making it real and allowing the bitter reality to be poetic, brutal poetry and the continuation of silence, about the past and loss and the continuation of what is about to be lost...

The truth is meaningless here, because people always forget, or choose to forget. Without a doubt, it is the scariest movie I have ever seen this year.

The Look of Silence quotes

  • Himself, brother of murdered Ramli Rukun: Tell me about that madness.

Himself, former leader the village death squad: Some killed so many people who have gone mad. A man climbed a palm tree, every morning, to call for prayer. Killed too many people. There is only one way to avoid it. Drink the blood or go crazy. But if you drink blood, you can do anything.

Himself, brother of murdered Ramli Rukun: [Testing the eyeglasses] What do you think...

Himself, former leader the village death squad: Salty and sweet. The human blood.

Himself, brother of murdered Ramli Rukun: Pardon?

Himself, former leader the village death squad: Human blood is salty and sweet. I know from experience.

  • Himself, former commander of a civilian militia: I'm not Rambo. I was Secretary General of the Komando Aksi.

Himself, brother of murdered Ramli Rukun: Or is it so great a crime that you did not want to admit?

Himself, former commander of a civilian militia: No, I do not think that's great.

Himself, brother of murdered Ramli Rukun: But a million people died...

Himself, former commander of a civilian militia: That's politics. Politics is the process of achieving your ideals.

    [laughing]

Himself, former commander of a civilian militia: In many ways...
