Only the sea will last

Today, I watched Angelopoulos's awesome masterpiece "Eternal Day". This great god explored the meaning of life in the film, and the proposition is not serious.

In the film, there is a dying old man who will be admitted to the hospital tomorrow. In this last day of freedom, he wants to entrust his dog to his daughter, but the other party is unwilling to accept it. He sells the seaside apartment where his family has lived for many years. The old man is very sad. He met an Albanian child by chance and became friends with him, but had to say goodbye to him.

The old man recalled his young life and the scene of playing with his family on the beach. This is a gray day, but the memories are colorful and sunny. We say goodbye to the past every day, but one day we cannot see them again.

There is a finishing line in the movie: "How long will tomorrow be? One day longer than eternity." I understand this sentence like this: the moment is eternity, and only by cherishing the present can we achieve consummation. But the old man in the film, from young to aging, recalls only a moment. It can be seen that the so-called eternity is just a self-motivation illusion, allowing people to forget the short reality of life and to have fun in time. Nothing is eternal, only the sound of the sea waves remains.

Film is a kind of ultimate art, which combines literature, photography, music, art, etc., but the number of real masterpieces is limited. Many directors now make entertainment movies to make money, but these rubbish will eventually decay. A pursuit director will explore the essence of life and give people a sincere insight. Although the long and slow shots in "Eternal Day" make me sleepy in the soft bed in the afternoon, I still like this movie, and it makes me think about life again.

[Angelopoulos "Balkan Trilogy", the third] Four and a half stars. It belongs to the relatively easy-to-understand works of Anzhe dimension. Bergman has "Wild Strawberry", Angel has "Eternal and One Day". Wandering poets and wandering children, black reality and white memories, present all kinds of helplessness in life. Meet the tomorrow that will never be seen, meet the tomorrow that will never be known. "—How long will it last tomorrow?—One more day than forever." At first glance, you may think that these An Zhe films have not made much progress in their techniques, but if you look closely, you can find that An Zhe's 360° + panning in the early stage has also been used. Combined with the viewpoint, the environment, and even its original level is perfectly integrated with the text. Favorite scene: ①The music starts again after the music is turned off, and the surreal audience’s subjective known turns into the reality of the objective unknown; ②The people on the fence at the border of the snow are full of people, staring at the hard-to-reach places like "Stork" ; ③It was only when he pulled away that he found the poet in the ruins, the protagonist slowly walked into the dreamlike scene, and finally walked to the ruins of life in person.

Poetic image...why have I wandered all my life? Why don't we know how to love? No amount of beautiful words are enough to describe the poignant beauty of life. Tell me, how long will it last tomorrow? One day and one eternity! Poetry, ocean, endless eternity, and a tribute to life! An Zhe is not only a great director, but also a great poet and musician. He writes poems with images, composes music with his life, and conveys love and freedom through all the beauty in the world!

Eternity and a Day quotes

  • Alexandre: All passed by so quickly. This suspect pain... my stubbornness to want to learn,to want to know... then the darkness... the silence around me... the silence. All made me believe that before the end of winter with the ethereal silhouettes of the boats, and their sudden breakthroughs in the sky, with the lovers along the promenade,in the declining sun, and the hypocritical promise of the spring, all made me believe that before the end of winter... My only regret, Anna... but is it only one?... is not to have finished anything. I left it all as a draft, shattered words here and there.

  • Alexandre: I once asked you "how long will tomorrow last?" and you answered me: Eternity and a day.
