Lonely survivor: good movies, cruel reality

After "Black Hawk Down" in 2001, there was no hearty war movie on the film map, including Hollywood, until the appearance of the "Lonely Survivor" in 2013. There is no doubt that this is a well-made masterpiece, which can become a classic of a war film.

In fact, since 1998, "Saving Private Ryan" raised war movies to a new level, there have been very few good war movies, because classics are difficult to surpass. "Black Hawk Down" set a new path for war films because of the truthfulness of the materials and the precise control of the scenes. But after the road was opened, until now "The Lonely Survivor", the masterpiece was not considered to be inherited. In the current era of superheroes flying in the sky, war movies seem to be in decline. Even "Lonely Survivor" is far from enough in terms of the achievements it has achieved, the box office and the penetrating power it has won. This also makes this film particularly popular and worthy of all military fans' attention.

Even if you don't talk about war films, it is a work loyal to reality to the extent that it is adapted according to reality. The cruelty of reality can almost be seen as a documentary. The degree of sadism is no exaggeration compared to any documentary.

Undoubtedly, this is a wonderful movie. The war scenes in the whole film are linked with each other. The plot twists and turns, the exquisite foreshadowing, the wonderful scenes, the heart is everywhere, and there is no urine point throughout the whole process. The hearts of the audience made it impossible to relax even after watching it.

Compared with movies, I care more about the real history behind the movies. Next, I will do a Baidu party and carry related materials. Those who are not happy can close the page.

The so-called "lone survivor" refers to a real war that took place in Afghanistan from June 28 to July 11, 2005. At that time, in order to destroy a Taliban armed force, the US military dispatched four "sea leopard" commandos for advance observation, intending to destroy the Taliban armed forces in a subsequent attack. Unfortunately, the reconnaissance team was spotted by three local sheep-grazing farmers. Then they reported the Taliban armed forces and attracted a large number of Taliban siege. In the end, only one of the four seals survived, and three American soldiers died in the war. Together with the victims of the American army who came to rescue, a total of 19 American soldiers were killed. This movie is based on the memoirs of the only survivor Marcus Rutrel, and it brings out the darkest page in the history of this altitude.

The specific process is as follows:

Before June 28, 2005, the United States learned that a Taliban general named Bin Shamak was lurking near the village of Asadabad in Kunar Province, on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. This time planning a terrorist attack mission is called a "high-value target." So it was included in the designated removal list by the US military. The US military intends to send a small team to lurch in the mountains near the village of Asadabad to detect Shamak's whereabouts. After confirming the target, the main force stationed at Bagram Air Force Base will be sent to clear the operation. The entire operation is named "Red Wing Operation".

The operation was officially launched in the early morning of June 28. The U.S. military plans to use helicopters to take advantage of the cover of night to send four SEALs to the outskirts of the target area, and then enter the incubation location by themselves. The implementation of the previous plan was perfect. The four special forces team members smoothly reached the vicinity of Asadabad village, found favorable terrain and lurked, and successfully detected the whereabouts of Ben Shamak. It's just that the signal in the mountainous area is not very good, and the contact phone number between the small team and the headquarters cannot be communicated. They can only wait for the opportunity to contact the base before the large forces come. After that, there was an indiscriminate bombardment, and the four team members could leave safely.

The four SEALs are commanded by Captain Mike Murphy, led by Matthew Axelson, Danny Diaz and Marcus Rutrel. In the operation, Murphy was the coordinator, Matthew Axelson and Marcus Rutrel served as snipers, Danny Diaz was in charge of radio communications, and Marcus was also a military doctor.

The four squads were originally intended to be non-participants and were only investigators, so their equipment did not carry bulletproof helmets, but only lightweight plastic umbrella helmets. As mentioned above, they all proceeded according to plan, and the mentality of the four players was quite relaxed. They also joked with each other, just waiting for their triumphant return. But the accident happened unexpectedly. In the area where they were ambushing, three Afghan shepherds came quietly and collided head-on with the team members. The three shepherds included an old man, a child, and a middle-aged man. . After the four team members subdued the Afghan shepherds, they began to negotiate a solution.

Commander Murphy was also unable to make a final conclusion, so he decided to vote to determine the fate, stay, life and death of the three Afghans. First, Danny Diaz decided to abstain, while Matthew Axelson advocated killing the three shepherds to ensure that the mission continues, while Mike Murphy advocated that the shepherds should go back and cancel earlier. In action, the team withdrew to a safe area for the base to send a plane to pick up the team members. The key vote went to Marcus. He said: "I don't want to go to jail." Because the shepherd is a non-combatant, the intentional killing of civilians during the war is illegal, so Marcus also decided to go the shepherd. According to a democratic vote, the shepherd was released and the team members decided to start retreating.

However, the shepherd quickly betrayed the Americans. Soon afterwards, a group of Taliban fighters with between 150 and 200 people surrounded with AK47s. The battle was inevitable, and the four players M4 and MK12 resisted.

In order to get in touch with the base quickly and seek military support, Danny Diaz, who is in charge of radio communications, has been located in a relatively high position in the team. He kept trying to get in touch with the base without success. The signal here is really bad. NS. However, his behavior of exposing himself caused him to be hit by bullets three times in succession, but he continued to fight after being hit by 5 bullets until the sixth bullet hit him directly in the head and died.

Commander Mike Murphy was shot in the stomach shortly after the battle began. After being injured, he continued to command the team to counterattack. Because Danny could not get in touch with the base, Murphy resolutely decided to climb out of the bunker he was hiding in and climbed to the open area on the top of the mountain to call the base for help via satellite phone. Although the signal was finally sent out, Murphy was hit in the chest and back one after another due to exposure to the Taliban fire in the open area, and died on the way back to the bunker.

The remaining two players, Marcus Ruteler, walked and beat while covering each other. Later, during the evacuation, the two separated. Among them, Matthew Axelson was first shot in the chest in the battle, and then fatally injured in the head. After that, he insisted on shooting about two Taliban fighters. Killed after the magazine.

While Marcus Rutrel was hit by shrapnel from an RPG rocket exploding beside him in many places during the battle, and fell into a hidden valley unconscious, but he was lucky to escape. After being chased by the Taliban, they crawled hard for a long distance and withdrew from the mountain. He smashed out of the siege alone, but he was also exhausted after crawling all night with the pain. Because of the lack of water, he had to add his own sweat. On the morning of the 29th the next day, he finally found a small stream. When he greedily drank water, he found an Afghan villager holding an AK-47 standing opposite the stream. The Afghan man looked at him, extended a thumb, and said, "American, OK!" Then he called a few Afghan villagers, took his MK12 rifle, and carried him to his village, which would protect him. stand up.

After Murphy sent the distress signal, on the evening of the 28th, the MH-47 "Chinook" transport helicopter carrying rescue forces flew to Kunar. There were 16 people on board, of which 8 were "Seal" commandos, including Murphy and their direct boss Eric S. Christensen, and the other 8 were crew members of the 160th Special Aviation Regiment. At the same time, another special team also went to Kunar for ground support. On the 28th, Kunar rained torrentially. Before the "Chinook" arrived at the rescue site in the light of daylight, it was hit by the Afghan militants who had been ambushing in the woods with RPG-7 rocket-assisted grenades. . The hit "Chinook" barely flew one mile, and finally made an emergency landing on a hillside. Unfortunately, the hillside was very steep. Coupled with the storm, the Chinook plunged into the ravine next to it. The plane was engulfed by flames on the spot, killing all 16 members of the plane. The U.S. military plane that was on the mission with the Chinook immediately reported the crash to the headquarters. From the beginning of the battle, 19 American troops were killed in just 4 hours.

Speaking of the Afghan villagers who were anti-Taliban, shortly after saving Marcus, the Taliban came to the village like a dog smelling prey. Marcus saw the villagers talking with the Taliban. I thought to myself that I would be sold. But the result was a big surprise for him. The villagers not only refused to hand over Marcus, they also bandaged his wounds and fed goat milk. But the Taliban did not give up. They hid at the intersection outside the village, waiting for the Americans to take the bait. Marcus gave the village elders his own things, and said some secret words that only the seals knew. Let the elders send someone to the U.S. military for help.

On June 29, at a US military base, receiving news of the "Chinook" crash, the US military immediately dispatched a large number of helicopters to the crash site. But it was delayed 24 hours by the sudden torrential rain. However, the U.S. military still sent dozens of military vehicles full of U.S. and Albanian government forces to the vicinity of the crash site, while keeping 12 helicopters hovering over Kunar. Hundreds of soldiers have camped in the valley near the crash. .

On the evening of June 30, the US military finally arrived at the "Chinook" crash site and found the bodies of 16 American soldiers who had been burned beyond recognition. The youngest of these 16 fighters was only 20 years old, and the oldest was 40 years old. Among them, Eric S. Christensen.

On the evening of July 2, the last surviving seal member Marcus asked the villagers to find the US military outpost stationed there, and informed the US military that Marcus was still alive and recovering from his injuries in the village. The US army quickly sent him to Bagram Air Force Base. The US military commander in charge of the rescue carefully checked the villagers' words. It was concluded that he was not lying and wanted to lead the U.S. military into a trap. So the rescue operation was launched immediately.

On the evening of July 3, the American AC-130 large transport attack aircraft violently bombed the Taliban who had set up an ambush on the edge of the village. More than 100 people were killed on the spot. A rescue helicopter took advantage of the gap and plunged into a pre-arranged rescue location outside the village and landed. The pilot saw three Afghans running towards the plane with an American in their arms, raised their guns and asked, "Who is your favorite hero?" Marcus replied: "Spider-Man!" The password was correct. Rescue personnel pulled Marcus into the cabin and "welcome home".

On July 4, the U.S. Army found the remains of two U.S. soldiers on the 4th. They are 25-year-old private Danny Diaz and 29-year-old Captain Mike Murphy.

On July 11, the US military found the remains of the last SEAL member, Matthew Axelson.

During the 10-day rescue. The angry Americans launched violent air strikes in the Kunar area, and many strongholds believed to be militants were blown to pieces. The US military dispatched more than 150 sorties, including AC-130 attack aircraft, and killed more than 600 Taliban.

But Asadullah Waffa, governor of Kunar Province, told AFP reporters that the US airstrikes caused the deaths of 17 local villagers, including some women and children. It was July 1st, and several civilians were killed by air strikes first; afterwards, several villagers went to inspect and were killed by a bomb dropped by the US army. The U.S. military sent people into the village to investigate. On the 4th, the U.S. military finally had to admit that 17 civilians were killed in the No. 1 operation.

This rescue operation was the largest for the US military since the Vietnam War. The death of 19 elite troops was also a painful experience for the US military. In particular, the death of 11 SEALs caused heavy losses to the SEALs.

However, in the battle between the four SEALs and the Taliban, four non-combatants still killed 35 fighters of the Taliban armed forces. The strength of the US military has also been highlighted.

In view of Murphy's brave behavior to climb out of the bunker and climb up to contact the base, Murphy was praised and awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. In 2008, the US Navy named a newly launched guided-missile destroyer "USS Michael Murphy" (DDG-112) as a memorial to Murphy.

Because "The Lonely Survivor" was adapted from Marcus's memoirs, he was not quite clear about the overall combat behavior of the US military that took place after he was rescued. Therefore, the clue is slightly single, but it is also more detailed and true. The film also revealed the reasons why the Afghan villagers risked their deaths to save Marcus, which can be regarded as a beginning and an end.

Whether it is a movie or reality, the topic about whether the three shepherds should be saved has been going on for a long time. After surviving, Marcus admitted that the decision not to kill the shepherd made him regret for life. However, if they killed the shepherd, including the elderly and children, and then successfully completed the mission, then the murder of those who did not participate in the war would still be convicted, and Marcus and the others would spend their lives in confession. It's not right to kill, it's not right to not kill, this choice is really an unsolvable problem.

The cruelty of war is that once it starts, it cannot end well. The deaths of the three SEALs and the 16 soldiers who followed the rescue mission were painful. But the U.S. military’s nearly crazy retaliation. The hundreds of Taliban killed in the war were also fresh lives, and the 17 civilians who were killed by accident were even more unjustified for their deaths. The only result of the war is to show the ugliness of the war.

"The Lonely Lucky" reproduced the war objectively. From the perspective of the US military, it can be described as a large-scale recruitment advertisement. But on the whole, I still maintained enough restraint to tell the whole story smoothly and more interestingly.

The first reaction after reading it was, ah, it turns out that this story is like this? The second reaction is how such a story was filmed like this. . . Peter Berg. . How should I put it, the technique of all films, including the soundtrack, will always be the same as in "Light of Victory". . But it's a bit unfair to watch Ozu Hou Xiaoxian and then run to see this one afternoon. . .

4.5. Not only is it an adaptation of the truth, but also the shooting method is the pursuit of truthfulness, especially the tens of minutes in the middle of the forest battle, the subjective subjective shots shaking, severely weakened the soundtrack, leaving behind the sound of heartbeat, breathing, and dying. Wheezing. I thought that the story was still the main theme, but it was uncharacteristically, without beautifying oneself and demonizing others, without personal heroism. Unexpectedly at the end, it is an improvement or turning point in the relationship between the two sides in the foreign war.
