I watched a very old black-and-white movie in a small theater in Bo Village in '18. It cost only five dollars, and almost all people watched were elderly people. Although there is no color, it can make people feel the emotion that the author wants to express and the peculiar weight of that era.
To be honest, Japanese and English subtitles, my level at the time was not enough to understand every sentence, but the pictures and soundtrack of this film gave me a sense of immersion of the times.
From the lightheartedness of the early days to the cruelty of the war, the protagonist is also changing from the small self to the big self. When the protagonist turned around and refused to leave, I think he also made a decision. Of course he wants to return to his hometown, but now he is no longer living for himself, his life has a higher meaning. He chose the latter, and he also chose an avenue.
