The Unconstrained Mind——About "Death Poetry Society"

The 1989 film was only seen in the summer of 2007. I still feel fortunate to encounter classics, regardless of time.

First,
this is a very clean and pure film, a traditional dogma preparatory college, a group of students with dreams, a teacher with freedom in mind, they gradually understand the true meaning of life in the process of exploring life and ideals.
In 1959, at Wilton Preparatory College, where the educational model was fixed, the dogma was monotonous, and the mind was constrained. However, the arrival of the new teacher John Keating brought a touch of anger to the college. He encouraged students to observe the world around them with a new perspective; he introduced many thoughtful poems to students; he advocated a free and divergent philosophy of thinking, and he advocated choosing one's life with a free mind. These anti-traditional ideas aroused the hearts of young people and caused great repercussions. Unfortunately, a student named Neal committed suicide due to endless restraints, and John Keating had to leave the school...
In the film, many philosophical verses impressed me deeply, and the whole process gave me a lot of soul shock.

"We read and write poetry, not for her dexterity, we read and write poetry, because we are a member of mankind, and mankind is full of enthusiasm."
This is a world that needs reasons, goals, goals, results, gains and losses... , Seems to be full of many guidelines. In fact, the process of human life is nothing more than being driven by a feeling or passion. For example, the pure love, if it is really pure, should give up too many distracting thoughts, otherwise, everything will be imprisoned and constrained.
As John Keating told the students, to love poetry is not to love her superficial skills, let alone read it with a "functional" mechanical taste, but a kind of love from the bottom of my heart. Only in this way can we discover the little-known side. If poetry is like this, how can life be?

"I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately, I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow out of life, the life of all non rout, and not, when I came to die, but found he had never lived."
Living The world is floating between reality and illusion. One side is bondage and pressure, and the other side is passion and dreams. John Keating is a teacher in reality and a person with a free halo in the real world. He is like a helmsman to guide students to the other side of their dreams. He said, "Only in dreams can people be truly free. It has always been and will always be." Life should have a dream, even if it is a bit fantasy. I hate those things that make life boring and realistic, she makes the world extremely mediocre. The dreamlike fantasy world is often the fulcrum of my life, although sometimes it is a mixture of pain and sorrow.
Life is a process, some are superficial and some are profound. Different choices determine different life states. In a short life, one should absorb the essence of life and smash all the imprisoned souls, so as to leave the world with a smile and contentment at the end of life.

4.
"When you think you know something, you must look at it from a different angle. Even if it seems stupid or wrong, you must try it. When you read, don’t just think of the author’s opinion, think of you The insights, children, you must work hard to find your own voice."
Admittedly, experience is the best guide. And if you have never experienced it, how can you understand the true meaning? But to measure the advancing world by the past standards is the greatest destruction to people! John Keating breaks the golden rules of dogma and uses a completely different way of thinking to inspire passion in the heart. He asked students to stand on the table and watch the world, walk in their own personal way, follow their own heart to choose the path, and work hard to make their voice echo in the vast world. Even though the voice was extremely weak, at least it released the heart and soul.
In fact, when life has itself, everything starts to be different.

Even though the real world will smooth out many sharp water chestnuts, the light of the soul hidden in the heart cannot be imprisoned. "The Catcher in the Rye" says, "When you are young, you can choose a glorious death for lofty ideals. When you are old, you can choose a humble life for your lofty ideals." Either glory or humble, the only thing remains the same. What is ideal, dream, or fantasy.
When I wrote this, I suddenly understood the meaning of "Death Poetry Society": let the part that do not belong to me die in life, let the soul not be imprisoned, and be purely free, in order to seek a true life and a meaningful life.
Neil is dead, Todd and the other children have not given up on the pursuit of their dreams, John Keating is gone, and a new life ideal may be gestating. Some things never stop, and never stop!

Finally, I have to say that Robin Williams performed quite well.
It is a great pity that such a teacher has never met.

I still believe that as long as you want to go, even if the whole world is blocking, people can still go, not to mention who is so important will be blocked by the world. Having both is an inevitable pain. I have always insisted that the most important thing is to be carried on my back. Let me say that you are forced by the environment as an excuse. My giving up is always a choice rather than a compromise.

This is the worst way to read poetry I have ever seen on the screen. Whitman's "The Captain" is no different from "The Sea Sails by the Helmsman". Whitman’s achievements and gifts are musical, and the movie wants to give it meaning, and the result is a mess. Like the modern version of Madame Bovary and her descendants, the class did not go to destruction in the end and had to praise Hollywood. The kind of warmth can be called a universal scientific principle.

Dead Poets Society quotes

  • Dr. Hagar: That wouldn't be a radio in your lap, would it, Mr. Pitts?

Gerard Pitts: No, sir, science experiment... Radar!

  • [after hearing "The Introduction to Poetry"]

John Keating: Excrement! That's what I think of Mr. J. Evans Pritchard! We're not laying pipe! We're talking about poetry. How can you describe poetry like American Bandstand? "I like Byron, I give him a 42 but I can't dance to it!"
