About Jane's life

When Jane first started her research, she said that she had never thought about getting married, it was not in her consideration, she was full of work. Later, when I met Hugo, they naturally got married and had children. The first thought was "really fragrant". After thinking about it carefully, how many people can’t ask for this kind of free and unconstrained life?

The origin of Jane and Hugo's relationship is because of work, and it is also because of work that the conflict and the divorce. Needless to say, Jane has dedicated her life to field research.

When Jane and Hugo had a conflict in their relationship (the two had different jobs, and Hugo wanted Jane to go to the prairie with him), she once wrote a letter (telegram?) to her mother to ask her for advice, and her mother replied :

"My dear Jane, there's no man you can't lose. There's never been a heartbreak for men, their minds are full of work and their dreams. Women are there for that. Love your mom"

The translation may be "Men are big pigs' hooves!" Jane had less contact with her father since she was a child, so it can be understood that her requirements and expectations for her other half are more from her mother and chimpanzee.

About scientific research

When I was in junior high school or elementary school, I learned about Jane from textbooks, but now watching this documentary, I have a completely different feeling, and the angle of watching the film is different. I think to a large extent, it is because of certain scientific training.

At the beginning of the film, Jane began to study chimpanzees, and my first thought was to what extent the previous work had done. It's well presented here in the film, almost zero (seems like one guy did a three-month survey and only saw a chimpanzee once or twice, and another tried to approach them by dousing himself with chimpanzee feces, but did not say the result).

Jane has no university education, and she said that she lacked scientific training at the beginning, so her research method has certain problems. For example, chimpanzees should not be named, but should be replaced by numbers to avoid emotional factors. For example, I put a lot of bananas in my camp to attract them. At that time, I thought about whether it would cause some uncontrollable situations, such as looting, which turned out to be the case. Later, after the chimpanzees were collectively infected with an epidemic and died on a large scale, Jane's scientific research team stipulated that physical contact between researchers and chimpanzees is not allowed.

The film has a brief introduction to the research on chimpanzees. I believe this is a very meaningful research, but it is not explained very clearly in the film. Science needs storytelling, so why study chimpanzees? The film uses Jane's life to tell a very pleasant story, but the scientific explanation is not clear enough.

other

A little joke: Before Jane went to Africa, she said that she was glad she didn't go to college. Later, a research base was established here, and many doctors and postdoctoral fellows were trained. Mmm, it smells so good!

A small sigh: scientific research activities actually require certain marketing methods. For example, Jane has been on the cover of National Geographic magazine, and she also carries chimpanzee puppets when she goes out to give a speech. This will help strengthen her personal brand and personal influence. Contribute to your own research application funding.

What I don't understand is that in the documentary, all Jane and her students are dressed in short-sleeved shorts in the wild, even if they are walking in the jungle, but don't they usually wear long-sleeved trousers in order to protect themselves outdoors?

A small discovery: the originator of the lithium battery industry is Goodenough, and Jane is Goodall. It appears that self-confidence is a necessary condition for success.

Jane quotes

  • Jane Goodall: It was probably mostly frustrating because they kept running away. And while chimpanzees are running away from you, you can't really get down to the details of their behavior and in the back of my mind it was always the fear if I don't find out something exciting, the money will run out cause all my earlier observations were either chimps close up running away or sitting on the peak or some other spot and watching them through binoculars.

  • Jane Goodall: The more I learned, the more I realized how like us they were in so many ways.
