There is no paradise.

An old film nearly 10 years ago, after having been to Thailand 3 times, I saw LP Southeast Asia Book recommend this film as a must-see movie in Thailand. Looking for it, I found that it was unexpectedly good, almost the best movie I have seen this year. Of course, maybe it was because I thought it was a commercial film of scenery + horror, and I lowered my expectations, so there were surprises.

There are really many surprises, and many shots are beautifully shot, such as the scene where the hero and heroine are on the beach under the moonlight. The scene where Richard transforms into a character in the game is also a stroke of genius, but when I learned that the director of this film made "Trainspotting", I was not surprised.

The surprise came from Thailand, which I am familiar with. Bangkok, the noisy Khao San Road, the cramped and cramped Guest House, Koh Samui, Phang Nga, Bangalow, marijuana, rock, beach spree, backpackers in hemp clothes, hippies who are drunk, and beaches where the dead are not worth their lives.

Of course, more surprises come from the plot. Although I read the plot introduction first, I am constantly surprised by the development of the plot. This is a Thai version of "Lost Horizon", where a few young people go to find Shangri-La or Peach Blossom Land in Thailand. When they searched all the way and finally reached the legendary paradise, what they saw was indeed a picture of a man farming and a woman weaving. But as the story goes on, it's the exact opposite of "Lost Horizon" or "Peach Blossom Land".

"Desires still exist, the sun can't go out, and the sea can't wash them away." People who have escaped from the world still miss or say that they need batteries, sanitary napkins, condoms, chocolate, curry beef, newspapers in the material world... If this is the case, then January A big purchase is solved. What can't be solved is that they need to keep this secret, even if they watch their companions die. The story or the people in the story became more and more cruel, and the heaven collapsed.

After six people died, what this story tells us is actually "Why search for the so-called heaven" sung by Guangliang, or Charlene's monologue in "I've never been to me":

Hey, you know what paradise is?
It's a lie, a fantasy we create about people and places as we'd like them to be
But you know what truth is?
It's that little baby you're holding, it's that man you fought with this morning
The same one you're going to make love with tonight
That's truth, that's love...

A book of "Lost Horizon" makes people still looking for Shangri-La, or going straight to the little boy whose real name is Zhongdian town, but after watching "The Beach", I just want to stay at home and not go anywhere, even if I return to Thailand someday, I won't go looking for that beach.

Quite sharp, the young LEO seems to be the spokesperson for the "new experience"

What is the price of the existence of modern Taohuayuan? In fact, the price paid for restoring the original life is even heavier, and the cruelty and pleasure of human nature are even more heartbreaking. I still like some of the main actors in this movie.

The Beach quotes

  • Hustler: Hey! Do you need somewhere to stay?

Richard: Well, I'll be fine. I'll find my own place thanks!

Hustler: Good time boy! Girl! Fucking! No problem.

Hustler: You wanna drink snake blood?

Richard: Wait a minute, did you say snake blood?

    Hustler: Oh yeah!

    Richard: No thanks.

Hustler: What is wrong with snake blood?

Richard: I just don't like the idea.

Hustler: Or maybe you're scared, afraid of something new!

Richard: No, I just don't like the idea, that's all.

Hustler: Ah-ha! Just like every tourist, you are all the same, just like America!

Richard: And me, I still believe in paradise. But now at least I know it's not some place you can look for, 'cause it's not where you go. It's how you feel for a moment in your life when you're a part of something, and if you find that moment... it lasts forever...
