The beginning of the novel was liked a dream in the middle summer day: the bees flied into the dream of the girl, as the angel from the Heaven.
This was the summer of 1984, the 14 years old girl escaped from her father's home to find the shadow of her dead mother.
Her nanny R was beat by several white men and put into the jail. After saving her from the hospital, they escaped together. According to the picture of the black Maria left by her mother, they went to Tibour. They lived in three black women's family and worked for them.
This family lived in a big pink house in the town. There were three sisters: August, June and May. Sometimes I really admired this female family without man. They made living for beekeeping, and worshiped Maria. August was quite knowledgeable, and familiar with religious fables. She was gentle and kind, who could look directly into your inner heart. June was a solemn woman and good at playing violoncello. As for myself, I like May, the youngest sister most. She had a lovely twin sister, April. But April was badly treated by the white men in the town and finally committed suicide. May was badly upset by her death. And from then on, she had something wrong with her mind. But in my eyes, she was perfect. She made the life a fairy tale. She could cook very well; she lured the pests in away from he home by cookies instead of killing them;she even made red stocks for the machine at home. Listening to the advice from her older sister August, May made a wall, and went there to cry when she was sad. The same way of the Wailing Wall, right? At last, May also committed suicide, just like her twin sister April. In my opinion, she didn't die only for herself, but for the suffering of the whole blacks. This was too heavy for her to bear. But now, she could live happily together with her parents and April in Heaven. I loved her, and I wished her well in the splendid Paradise Garden.but for the suffering of the whole blacks. Life in this family was cheerful. The interesting story of August, the busy work of beekeeping, the mysterious custom of the Blacks were all fresh and beautiful to the girl, Lily.
Here she also met her first love in her life. He was a young handsome black boy named Zach. He took her to the town; he gave her a nice notebook as gift; he took her to the movie. From those delicate descriptions, we reminded of our own first love and smiled.
She had a familiar sense for the house, because her mother once lived here. Under this gentle environment, the hurt in her heart was cured. Finally, She forgave herself, who undersignedly killed her mother when she was young, and her father, who was deeply hurt by his beloved woman.
The story had a bright ending. You could have a cup of honey tea when you finished it.

Even the crying point is low and I can see the inner cow's face. The story of finding love and liberation is still touching in such a complex background. Dakota Fanning's acting is really good!

    Why did MAY commit suicide?

The Secret Life of Bees quotes

  • Rosaleen Daise: How come you all got names from a calendar?

May Boatwright: Our mama loved spring and summer. We had an April too, but she... she died when she was little.

[runs out of the room, sobbing and humming]

  • Neil: *Walks up to June who slowly rises from her chair* Hi.

    June Boatwright: Hi.

Neil: *pause* Did you call me here to talk? I am a little busy...

June Boatwright: You ain't the only one who's busy, Neil.

Neil: *voice rises in irritation* So I'm just supposed to stand here and watch how busy you are...

June Boatwright: No! *Both turn away with a sigh*
