The Black Hole of Vengeance

In the 1972 Munich Olympics, 11 Israeli athletes were taken hostage by the Palestinian terrorist organization "Black September". The German police failed to rescue them. All terrorists and athletes died. This incident shocked the world and was called the "Munich Massacre". Spielberg's "Munich" is based on this, but the main content of the film is not the cause and effect of the tragedy, but the retaliation taken by Israel after the incident.

After the incident, the Israeli side took a large-scale retaliatory action by bombing the Palestinian military training area. Secretly they are secretly planning to assassinate all personnel involved in the incident. Mossad bodyguard Avner (Eric Bana, "Hulk"), South African killer Steve (Daniel Craig, the new 007), Israeli gentleman Carl (Ciarán Hinds, Caesar in HBO "Rome") with a pipe all day, gentle The five-member assassination team composed of the German antique dealer Robert and the Belgian bomb expert Hans launched a revenge operation on the European continent according to the list of 11 people drawn up by Mossad. Malta, Athens, New York, Budapest, Paris, Rome... As the assassinations unfolded, they gradually fell into inner moral struggles, and the secret agencies of countries such as the CIA and KGB were even more involved. The group members began to be assassinated one after another, and revenge seemed more and more endless.

The film is based on "Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team" written by George Jonas. And this is the most controversial point of the film. Israel strongly condemned Spielberg for framing the film on a "fictional" book, ignoring the truth of history. Spielberg also took this factor into consideration, and the film began to use "inspired by real events" instead of "based on the real events", which is generally used in film adaptations based on real events. For movies with discounted authenticity, the connotation is the most worthy of discussion.

The biggest controversy in the film is the moral controversy. In the struggle between people, fist and fist, both sides who kill each other consider themselves to be the righteous, and there is a moral dilemma in the world. Israelis have the right to survive, and Palestinians have the right to "go home". Right, the film took a lot of effort to balance the two. The main method is to use parallel editing to create contrast. At the beginning of the film, the names of the murdered Israeli movement and the names of the Palestinians planned to be assassinated were interlaced and edited, interspersed with scenes of the Munich incident during the assassination process. In the final climax of the film, the scene of the terrorist killing the athletes was cut against Avner's inextricably guilt and having sex with his wife. The original murder scene that most incites revenge is the cause, and the unforgettable moral condemnation after revenge is the result. The cause and the result are painful, only the process is killing without thinking.

Vendetta is a never-ending black hole. After a person is sucked in, only hatred can be seen with his eyes. The Mossad official said in the movie: We want them to pay the most expensive price. In fact, both in terms of money and life, Israel has paid a more expensive price. There is no victor on both sides of the vendetta. One year after the Munich incident, Israel launched a fourth large-scale war against Arab countries. In the last shot of the movie, Manhattan still stands in the distance with twin towers. Spielberg is worried that the United States is becoming another country in retaliation after the terrorist attack.

It is worth pointing out that for the film with the theme of peace, the Jewish director has too much sympathy for the portrayal of Israel. While the film promotes "put down the butcher knife", it does not have much emotional inclination towards the Palestinians and is not completely exposed. Looking at the problem outside the body is a pity that the film can't reach the classics.

Among the athletes killed in the Munich incident that year was an athlete named Moshe Weinberg. When he was killed, his child was only one month old. His child Guri Weinburg plays his father in the film. The continuation and continuity of life is the most sincere move.
