The Red Baron - Gentlemen's War

The Red Baron - Furmanred von Richthofen, who shot down 80 enemy planes during World War I, was revered as the ace of the trump cards by both the enemy and us. Ever since he knew of his illustrious name, every time he saw that old-fashioned fighter jet in red, he was in awe. And when I found out there was a movie about him, I naturally watched it with great interest. Although I personally think that compared to World War II, the good and evil are clear, neither of the two sides in World War I was a good person. As said in the movie, World War I was just a few intermarriages with each other for countless times, and there were even close relatives who were suspected of breeding European royal family relatives. It's just a gamble with countless lives at stake for each other's benefit. But the only bright spot was the boring but bloody ground battle of the clunky tanks, where the trench stations ruled by meat grinder-like machine guns and the vile chemical warfare waged on both sides with peace of mind. There is a war like a gentleman in between. And this red baron, I don't want to comment on whether he belongs to the righteous side or the evil side, but his personal charm is admirable.

The word war always gives people two extreme feelings. One is the bloody and cruel side of the real battlefield, which is horrific and bloody, and the same kind of people kill each other, and civilization is destroyed by swords and gunfire; the other is One is the glorious and immortal legend of the heroes, which is even more shocking against the background of iron and blood, radiant and dizzying, and even some longing for the bloody corpse mountain. This is just like the Red Baron's country, Germany. People can express great indignation and contempt for his Gestapo, genocide, and concentration camps, but also because the Germans have such unpretentious generals as Guderian and Rommel. Works of art like Panther tanks, Stuart attack aircraft, and marvel at legendary soldiers like Wittmann (25 Allied tanks in one battle) and Hartmann (352 enemy planes) and admire. And those truly legendary soldiers always have mixed reputations, such as Patton, such as Rommel, such as Napoleon... This is because war, a place full of death and excitement, reflects human nature to the extreme, and the ugly and the glorious echo each other. Just like in the skies of the First World War, the plane was only used for reconnaissance at first, and combined with the existence of the class system at that time and the high requirements of pilots, the planes were often piloted by some nobles of high background, well-educated, and met each other. Sometimes they even salute each other. Until someone finally couldn't help but use a weapon, but it seems that the earliest air combat weapons were not machine guns or pistols, but cold weapons like bricks and grappling hooks. Slowly, some people found that they could fly a plane and shoot with a pistol at the same time. Later, someone tied a machine gun to the plane. Finally, the plane finally had the classification of a fighter. The fighter pilots, instead of the cavalry, who were strafed with eye-catching machine guns, became a symbol of glory and legend. In the blue and boundless sky, each other fights for life and death with complex and dazzling skills, and the excitement and romance are confused. And the risk is not too big, there are many pilots who can escape safely after being shot down, and then continue to fly. Later, in the British air battle of World War II, the British Air Force pilots won the victory in adversity by relying on the advantages of local combat and the strong industrial manufacturing power of the United States. On the other hand, the poor Luftwaffe pilots, once shot down, have no return, and they have to wait until the war is over... This is much safer than the average soldier who braves the machine guns and artillery charges on the ground battlefield, but also passes through the minefields and barbed wire, and finally engages in a hand-to-hand battle. Of course, it has to be said that the technical advantages of pilots are unparalleled. Because of this, this group of noble knights in the sky is always easier to become people's heroes, and they also maintain mutual courtesy and respect like gentlemen. As described in the movie "Red Baron", pilots always cherish each other, and sometimes even the winners and losers can establish a deep friendship. It is said that the pilots of China and the United States on the battlefield in North Korea would meet after decades. Although they have already become the commander-in-chief of the air force of their respective countries, they can still talk very happily. This is the mutual sympathy after fighting each other with courage and wisdom as the trump card, with life as the bet, and fighting each other. It can even be said that when the two sides were slaughtered, their thoughts merged with each other with their blood. This is not just for fighter pilots, but for many military personnel. Separated by the Iron Curtain of the Cold War, Zhukov, the symbol of the Soviet army, and Eisenhower, the symbol of the Allied forces, cherished each other. And when Palestine-Israel peace talks, looking at the handshake between the leaders of the two sides, how can you imagine that the owner of one of the hands is the most radical resister, while the other is the most staunch repressor. Perhaps only after experiencing that moment of life and death, a real person will understand the true meaning of life and become a true gentleman.

I have never liked modern warfare very much, and I feel that it lacks the original blood and art. Yes, when you see the ironclads roaring at each other, when you see the knights screaming and charging, when you see the tanks colliding like a torrent, when you see the fighter jets in the air When fighting with great skill, you will feel that these pictures are like indescribable works of art, making your blood boil. And the burst of courage and wisdom of those war conductors at the moment of life and death is also regarded as art and passed down to this day. However, when I see Americans smashing advanced weapons piled up with money against weak and helpless countries and some of these weak countries attacking civilians with all-out means as a resistance, I Suddenly it was discovered that the war only reflected its most negative side, and the most positive side was gone. The gentlemen are gone, just a group of terrorists fighting the biggest terror maker in the world. When you blow up a group of people thousands of kilometers away with a precision-guided missile one day, when you take an AK47 and shoot the unresisting people, all you have is cruelty and blood, but honor and greatness It's long gone... bye, gentleman's war...

The Red Baron quotes

  • Manfred von Richthofen: [briefing the other pilots] Keep the sun on your back. Don't fire too soon. It just warns your opponents, it has no other effects. The best range for shooting is 50 meters, not more. But remember, our tasks is to bring down aeroplanes, not men. So stop firing when your opponent's falling. Gentlemen, we are sportsmen, not butchers.

  • Manfred von Richthofen: Mademoiselle! Have I done something wrong? Am I not worth an answer, or is it just you hate all men?

Käte: Hate? I don't hate you. Hate is a male domain.

Manfred von Richthofen: But you are angry, aren't you?

Käte: [grabbing the scarf] There is another man's blood on it. And you do not seem to care. Men like you scared me because I do not understand why you do what you do. And being scared makes me angry...

    [continues up the stairs]

Manfred von Richthofen: Wait, WAIT! Imagine you were out there, like a hawk. Looking down... The wind blows around you. The smell of the engine, draft from the propeller. Out there you can just fall, you can climb, turn, spin... Freedom! That's what men always dreamt of. I've dreamt of it since I was a little boy. But the best part, is the chase! The fights... The hunt! It's like a match. A joust, just like sports.

Käte: Tennis does not kill you. It's childish dreams that got your friends killed. No, I don't hate you, Baron. I pity you.
