The Age of Innocence

Although I heard that Bertolucci's "Dreamer" was not very well received, I liked it when I saw the three beautiful and childish children on the cover of the disc skin looking very awkward.
The film is adapted from writer Gilbert Adair's novels involving same-sex sex and brother-sister incest plots. The film is based on the French student movement in 1968 and tells the subtle and extreme conflicts between a woman and two men in the troubled Paris. relation. But not for the safflower in May of 1968, not for the blood of the revolution. It is Lao Bei, who is old and fussy, to pay tribute to the lost youth and to the eternal film with this film. Therefore, this film with a strong nostalgic complex is a love letter written on film to the past innocence.
Garbo's "Queen Christina", "Blonde Venus", Todd Brownling's genre films, Godard's "Outlaw"... Those black and white images continue to appear in the film, and the ruffian Kun Ding, my compatriot Tonadore's film also expresses his love for movies, a kind of love that makes people heart-wrenching, and can never be forgotten.
I haven't seen such a pure and beautiful movie in a long time. From a certain point of view, I don't think it's an exaggeration to call this film The Age of Innocence. The film permeates the streets of Paris in 1968, the kind of air that belongs to the idealists. Three lovely children in a turbulent time have lived their lives into such a personal game of self-indulge. But because of this, some people say that the film is not grand enough and not epic. I don't understand why it is necessary to try to comment on history? History is indescribable, it is so turbid and uncertain, we can only see the appearance but not understand its meaning. Therefore, it is more meaningful to focus on each individual itself than the so-called historical social reality. So Lao Bei chose two such narcissistic characters as Theo and Isabel, a story of such indulgence and self-imposed confinement, which made the exciting torrent of the times in 1968 a beautiful background or annotation.
That era was truly a golden age for young people. Starting from the student movement in France, there are our Cultural Revolution, the Japanese student movement, and the anti-Vietnam War in the United States. Young people all over the world are full of enthusiasm. The Beatles began to sing, and Jimmy sang at the gate. At that time, it was widely believed that the world was getting better and better, and that you would be part of that process. It seems that everywhere freedom is passion and hope. But this is not the case today. Lao Bei, who wanted to express this feeling, took this film as "a hope for today's youth".
Because in the course of history, more and more people have learned metaphors and whitewashing, and their inner desires have been dispelled by various lies. Therefore, the protagonists in the film do not hide their childish behavior without any moral code. Simple, innocent, is the most beautiful, as beautiful as those movies they love from the heart, as they show on the screen. Young flesh in the style of the classical school. The physical play of Matthew, Theo and Isabel brothers and sisters just makes erotica a game, an expression, a metaphor for Lao Bei. It's a pity that beauty is not tolerated in reality, is doomed to failure, and can only exist in the vast fantasy world that people see after self-isolation. Life cannot become a pure exploration of film, art, music, sex, politics and philosophy. But dear, don't you think that's why it's so precious? I longed to live that pure life, but the frenzy of pure need was almost gone in the air. That era has been labelled and sealed in the black hole of history. That can only be a dream, and even in a movie it can only be a dream. But fortunately, we still have movies, and we can still retain the touch and yearning for dreams in those streamer phantoms.

Erotica in a political context does not understand but moves you

I prefer the ending where the three of them die together, otherwise Mathhew seems too hard.

The Dreamers quotes

  • Matthew: I thought you had many lovers. I mean when I saw you for the first time, at the Cinématheque, you and Theo, you looked so cool, so sophisticated. Like a movie star.

Isabelle: I was. I was acting, Matthew

  • Isabelle: My parents fucked once in their lives. That's why we're twins, they didn't want to make it twice.
