On November 15, after the screening of the opening film of the German Film Festival "System Breaker" at the Broadway Art Center in Beijing, several guests conducted a targeted analysis of the film.

Among the audience who asked questions, there was also a system saboteur, who performed performance art on stage and was chased by security guards all over the theater, complaining about the unfair treatment he had received before. No matter what happens, we hope that the problems of these two system saboteurs can be solved at the source.

Post-screening talk of "System Breaker" at the 7th German Film Festival

Post-screening guests:

Simone Baumann, general manager of the German Film Association

· Curator of Shadan China Film Archive

·Associate Director of Program and Promotion of Yang Yang Broadway Film Center

· Founder and CEO of YoKID, Su Dezhong, Ph.D. in Psychology, University of Cambridge, UK

Moderator: We have a special guest today. When I discussed with the organizer, we agreed that we must hire a professional, because we are all engaged in movies and watching movies. The theme of this movie is too special. , we have no way to use our own knowledge to interpret it, so we specially invited Mr. Su Zhongde, a Ph.D. in psychology from Cambridge University and the founder and CEO of YoKID.

Q1: The film "System Destroyer" was shortlisted for the main competition of this year's Berlin Film Festival and won the Artistic Contribution Award. It will also be selected by Germany this year for the 2020 Oscar's Best Foreign Language Film. Ms. Man also mentioned that the director of this film is relatively young, and it is the first time to make a film. The subject matter is actually quite controversial. Such a result was unexpected in Germany at the time.

So I would like to ask Ms. Baumann to tell us about the situation at that time, why it was selected as the Olympic bid film, and that as an art film, it is suitable for such a film to be shown in a small range of art theaters. In Germany the film industry or German society.

Bowman: The style story of the film is really special. It took two years to raise funds for the film. First, it was recommended to TV channels, hoping to raise funds to make it into a TV film, but was rejected, and then the German Film Foundation also refused to provide him with funds. support.

It's really a great movie, and it's a very impressive movie, it's scripted very well, and in terms of production, it's got a lot of power, I think it all adds up That's the secret of the film's success. The praise he has received is not only at the film festival, but also in ordinary cinemas. This can be seen from the fact that the audience will recommend it to family members, friends, etc. after returning home, so it will have A very good propagation effect.

As for why it was selected to compete for next year's Academy Awards, it is because this film is indeed the best film in Germany this year. In the past years, we would choose some more familiar themes, and everyone would look at the types of stories they are used to.

But this year, the selection committee decided to choose a very fresh style, a film by a new director, which is also the first time in German history. This is done on purpose, so that everyone can see that this is our German film, and we are standing out from the crowd. different.

Q2: After watching this film, you may have a very profound feeling. The film has many very subjective shots. Whenever Benny is manic or ecstatic, whether it is from music, sound design, or editing In terms of rhythm, the director intentionally wants everyone to enter a corresponding world and experience what can be said to be a patient's perspective.

At the same time, for a patient like this, his world must feel uncomfortable to us, which may be one of the things that art cinema does. I talked to Shadan before, their film archive is also responsible for the selection of films by the National Art Film Projection Alliance. He had seen this film a long time ago, and he recommended it to the Art Association at that time.

The second question I would like to ask Mr. Shadan to talk about: such a movie with such a special artistic technique is difficult to meet the audience's appreciation level to a certain extent, and even the acceptance level may not reach it, even if you like art movies audience, so what do you think will be the prospect of such a new director's special artistic approach with special social issues, what do you think will be the prospect of promotion in the Arts Federation?

Sha Dan: I saw this film for the first time at the Shanghai International Film Festival in June this year. After the film won the award at the Berlin Film Festival, I heard many friends around me compliment the film, especially For the very superb and shocking performance of the little girl in the film, they all praised it, and even said whether the little girl has a chance to win the youngest actress at the Berlin Film Festival!

But after I watched this movie for the first time in Shanghai, I felt it was both shocking and uncomfortable at the same time. If I were to watch it a second time, I would not be so willing, but I am very happy to recommend this movie to everyone. Movies, as workers in the movie industry, we should actually recommend good movies to everyone in a reasonable and appropriate way, so that they can be known by movie audiences.

There are mainly two types of films in the film festival. These films are very different from Hollywood films. Among the system of art films represented by the Berlin Film Festival, one of the three major international film festivals, there are mainly two types of films. We will pay special attention to these types of films. The other type is based on the so-called aesthetic construction. For example, people are familiar with films like Bi Gan's "The Last Night on Earth" and Diao Yinan's new film "The Party at Southern Station" this year. And another big category is the works that take the issue.

Like today's work, it is actually a work about the relationship between social mechanisms and individuals, so the film is actually a typical work that will be particularly popular in film festivals. Although it is very small, it represents a manifestation of cultural diversity. This kind of film can always use various methods to enter the field of vision of Chinese film audiences in China.

So I don't think there will be obstacles to the audience's appreciation of it, and we, as film critics, we should make some more conscientious recommendations and recommendations for this film, especially the cinematic method, how to shoot the film, etc. guide.

Q3: We can talk about the title of the film [System Crasher]. Does such a word exist as an academic term, and what kind of group does it refer to?

Dr. Su: In the interpersonal relationship system of the protagonist, she is not based on right and wrong, black and white, but based on love and hate and her inner psychological state. She felt that if the other party cared about her, it was love, and if she didn't or quarreled, it was hate.

Just now, the host will use words like patient and patient to describe Benny, but from my point of view, I will give a definition called victim. We have seen in Germany, in fact, we also know that the German welfare system in the world is very sound.

In such a sound system, in the first sentence of the film that the safety glass will not be broken, there are so many loopholes. We can see that if something goes wrong at the source in the family system, the consequences can be disastrous.

In the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where I used to study as an undergraduate, or in Cambridge, we really need this kind of film to talk about, reflecting the connotation of psychology. If I were to talk, it might not be enough to talk for three hours. Thank you. Director, I also thank everyone for their interest in this topic and raise it to a value proposition that society will pay attention to, and that children are the most innocent but can also have the darkest behavior.

Q4: One of the questions I want to ask most after reading it is where is the way out? In the end, I would even think that the ending of this film is an open ending. It is better to say that the director is even a little lost and out of control in it. In fact, he does not know how to solve it.

Dr. Su: I understand very well that the director used an open ending at the end because the director really can't solve it, because we can't solve it, so the director can't solve it.

In this film, children are treated in many ways, including psychological guidance and medication. From my personal point of view, treating the symptoms is not the root cause. If the source of family warmth is not addressed, this matter cannot be resolved. This girl Benny is 100% unfortunate, but in two hours, she has been meeting some very lucky people.

It is a pity that these people are not his mother, and his mother fled. In the end we found that the root of all problems lies in the family itself. If there is really a way out, it might be more important to start with family education than to think about how to cure her disease.

Sha Dan: We have actually seen this film many times. This film may have a happy ending. Many times everyone seems to have seen hope. If every hope ends at that time, this film may be a happy ending. Melodrama is a melodrama, but because it does not become a melodrama in the end, but an inevitable tragic ending, the film becomes an art film.

I very much agree with Professor Su's Dr. Su, the movie is basically a hopeless ending. Including this girl may be sent to Africa now, and in a year or two, when she is 14 years old, she may be finally sent to a mental hospital.

This is an inevitable ending for him, I seem to feel. So I think this film provides such a very important issue of a dilemma, whether it is for our audience, or for the government, or for our social assistance agencies.

Q5: He has a lot of stream-of-consciousness expressions for this film, which is a very subjective presentation. So how do we evaluate an art film?

Shadan: Movies have no grammar. Whether a movie is good or not is whether you like it or not, or whether the movie really touched your heart. In this film, the director actually has a very important point, that is, it has a very important visual system, making a sensory demonstration, an extension of the senses.

All in all, I think that there are many kinds of film language in dealing with such a method. As for whether you say it is good or not, I think it is good if you like it yourself, because there is nothing in literary criticism that is right. Wrong, as long as it suits you, I think it will be fine.

book review

Long Vacation: System Breaker takes us close to PTSD sufferers and takes us into Benny's world with a lot of subjective shots. As a new director, the visual effects and conflicting effects of the film are very good, but the simplicity of the narrative and shots is lacking, so that apart from the subject matter of the film, the audience does not want to see it a second time. Although Benny is not redeemed in the film, it can bring people who watch the film a power to pay more attention to their own feelings and to pay more attention to social and personal relationships.

Hu Dan: The look and feel is similar to Memories of Murder, which is suppressed and understood. This makes people think about how to help the so-called problem children. I think the social significance is far-reaching.

The terrifying cruel reality: Germany's existing (already relatively complete) social security system, under the special education for child welfare, still exists a certain vicious cycle in the growth of "problem children", and it will only worsen. Every episode of a girl’s anger is like an ice axe in my heart, and her childish honesty and rudeness and occasionally unarmed and unabashed love for her mother can always balance this "strong violence" instantly. Performance. The structure of the movie repeated like a girl’s symptoms, and I felt tired and numb during the second half of watching the movie. Come to think of it, this change is just like my attitude towards a girl as an "ordinary person": at first I felt "unconditional sympathy" for her (poor, not her fault, and she didn't want to be like this), as she severely attacked others and Manipulate, I feel a kind of at a loss (Is it only locked up? What on earth?)-not to mention "Everyone has troubles"-really incomprehensible. Is life always this hard, or is it just when you are a kid? I don't know how Benni will answer many years later. I hope more and more people pay attention to CPSD. The last 20 minutes of the movie is a bit redundant.
