In 1993, a heavily damaged color copy was found, and in 2011 a full color restoration of the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film tells the thrilling adventure story of six astronomers on the moon, which is considered to be the pioneering work of science fiction movies. Inspired by Jules Verne's novel "From the Earth to the Moon" and H.G. Wells' novel "The First Men on the Moon". Hand-colored directly on each film print, the film was the first full-length feature film in color. The shot of the capsule hitting the face on the moon is the earliest known stop-motion animation.
