Confirming what M's long comment said, the sound of the early sound films only served as a substitute for the title card and an accessory to set off the narrative atmosphere, so the use of this sound is very mediocre and has no bright spots, and the main bright spot is still in the visual aspect. As other critics have said, the film continues the surrealism of Buñuel's debut, "An Andalusian Dog," and is likely to be the world's first surreal feature film. However, this movie is not a stream of consciousness like "An Andalusian Dog", because it is not depicting a dream or the subjective feelings of a movie character, but creating a surreal world to act as a satire of reality, a kind of realism. Starting from this film, Buñuel expanded surrealism from the depiction of stream of consciousness to the critique of realism, and later films such as "Grainless Land" were also an attempt at this kind of critique of realism.
Buñuel's favorite subject of satire—the modern bourgeoisie and religion—appeared in film for the first time, and later in many of his works, such as The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. The film has many unique and inspiring surreal visual designs such as:
