Whether or not Almodóvar was trying to convey something, I'm not sure. The film isn't about attacking pedophile priests, and it's not just about speaking out about homosexuality—it's like Clint Eastwood making a heterosexual movie for Almodóvar (nothing new?). I think the film is about sexual role-playing: about the roles we play, the roles that other people play, the roles we imagine to play, the roles that other people imagine us to play. If Almodóvar is right, then perhaps the most exciting sexual experiences we've ever experienced take place entirely in someone else's mind.
