Hesher's story centers on that, but it doesn't fall into this logical cliché. It is often the sunshine that helps people out of the dark, and Hesher brings TJ and Dad a different life with his unruly, rebellious and aggressiveness. Or that TJ borrowed Hesher's body to vent his dissatisfaction and anger.
Hesher is not the main character of the story, he is just a tool, a wrench to help the story develop and TJ's family get back on track.
The function of this wrench was on Grandma's funeral at the end, and the old lady of the neighbor said "Grandma once said, Life is just like walking in the rain. You could hide, take some cover or just get wet." Hesher this guy not only Walking in the rain, he was still running and roaring in prison; disrupting and returning other people's lives, and finally leaving a sentence "Hesher has been here".
I don't know if I should be glad that I met him in my life, or I should pray that I will never meet him.
Jon Cef's performance is very good, but I think Portman's role in it is like an idiot, and I haven't seen any good works after Black Swan.
