The narration is stable and regular, the structure is concise, the two suspicious cases are intertwined and narrated, the past and the present are alternately presented, and the performance of the actors completely adds to the film. Kathy Bates is a good actor, and the role of Dolores is portrayed as a vivid, flesh-and-blood character. The play is very precise, even the slightest change of mood. Humble and strong, repressed and self-respecting, Bates completely incarnates as a woman at the bottom, presenting her survival plight, family shadow, and tragic life to the fullest

Vera Donovan: Husbands die every day, Dolores. Why... one is probably dying right now while you're sitting here, weeping... They die, and leave their wives their money... I should know, shouldn't I?... Sometimes they're driving home from their mistress's apartment, and their brakes suddenly fail. An accident, Dolores, can be an unhappy woman's best friend.
