No dating, ha; no job, ha; New York, ha; me, ha ha.

You guys made the movie I always wanted to make! Big cities, drifters, ideals, life, do not sell hardships, do not pretend to be blood, but humorous and so meaningful.

I am all too familiar with these lives. My roommate wants to move out, and I can’t afford the rent, so I have to move too; I desperately want a job, and I don’t hesitate to say a little flattery, but I have to save the country; my close friend has a new life and wants to leave here, etc. I remember being depressed at the time, reluctant to mention my work to people, and wandering in the metropolis where I could no longer continue. I stretched my string hard, but also to whitewash the peace. I'm not as open-minded as Francis. I'm afraid I don't want to go to a small place to be a counselor. So I can't wait for the poor to come back, and Francis opens a new piece about her being a dance company secretary rather than a dancer.

It's not dating incompetence, it's not needed. In addition to the light sex life, I can't figure out why I want to live with a man. More importantly, Francis already has beautiful people around. They're total soulmates (exclusive of the flesh), talking about New York man book art all the way down, including sharing a bed with a sock-wearing Francis. As long as she is enough, men are too boring.

She is also part of New York. Francis thought he rejected her boyfriend's invitation to live together, just to be as close to her as yesterday. However, she wants to live in the place she has always dreamed of, with a person they despise. Girlfriends are real. She even tied the knot with the wealthy, whom Francis despised, and left New York. She is weak. The publisher of a big company is just a label for her to be complacent for a while. The full-time wife of a CEO is the destination where she is willing to abandon everything. She's not your typical money-worshipper, she's more cultured than Francis looks, with a pair of spectacles and a sarcastic rhetoric. However, there are still people who don't want their talents and backbone, and rely on men. Perhaps, she has some deep-seated reasons, such as an unhappy childhood and insecurity; cynicism about marriage, or using it as a springboard (foreshadowing greater ambitions). Instead, Francis is like a blank sheet of paper, so she is always happy, even if there is no work housing and friends leave.

Come here first, go to work.

I didn't find Chinese subtitles, but I watched it effortlessly, because they have a similar growth trajectory and an irreplaceable and irreversible friendship. There are so many falls along the way but stubbornly define this story as "comedy", that is because every time I think of it, I can smile.

So smart, so good-looking, right anywhere, good-looking everywhere.

Frances Ha quotes

  • Benji: Who were you fucking last week, Frances?

    Frances: I make love

    Benji: Frances: undateable

  • Frances: I have so much to do. I think I'll probably read Proust... Because sometimes it's good to do what you're supposed to when you're supposed to do it.

    Caroline: Proust is pretty heavy.

Frances: Yeah, but it's worth it, I hear.

Caroline: No, I meant the book. Carrying it on the plane.

Frances: I should probably learn French first... and then read it in French.
