In Warsaw, Poland, there is a troupe that includes an actor, Bronski (Tom Dugan), who is extremely good at imitating the German Nazi leader Hitler. Maria Tura (Carole Lombard) and Joseph Tura (Jack Benny) are a couple in the troupe that is currently performing "Hamlet." Between performances, Maria receives a bouquet of flowers from a young pilot, Stanislav Sobinski (Robert Stack), who arranges for Joseph to recite the famous line "to be or not to be" on stage. Sobinski went backstage, and the two fell in love. However, soon after the Nazis invaded Poland, Sobinski could only go to fight. The leader of Sobinski's team is Professor Siletsky. Sobinski wants Siletsky to help bring a letter to Maria, but Siletsky doesn't even know Maria, a famous actress, so Sobinski begins to doubt Siletsky. Sobinski returned to Warsaw to track down Siletsky. On the other hand, Maria was taken to see Siletsky by two Nazi soldiers. Siletsky also had a crush on Maria and hoped that Maria would become a Nazi spy in Poland. Maria fled home for an excuse, but unexpectedly met Sobinski and her husband Josef at home. How will this triangular relationship end, and how will they join forces to fight against the Nazis?

Long live LUBITSCH. After laughing, I remembered the actor who always played supporting roles. He always thought he could play Sherlock well, and his companions always laughed at him. Later, their home was occupied by the Germans, and the two of them couldn't even run the game. They were on the street. When shoveling the snow, he recited Sherlock's classic line again. This time the companion said, you can play Sherlock well. After experiencing the pain and anger, we can really write and read those poems.

To Be or Not to Be quotes

  • Joseph Tura: [disguised as a Gestapo officer] How did you get here?

    Greenberg: I was born here.

  • Joseph Tura: [disguised as a Gestapo officer] What do you want from the Führer?

Greenberg: What does he want from us? What does he want from Poland? Why possess us? Why? Why? Aren't we human? Have we not eyes? Have we not hands? Organs? Senses? Dimensions? Affections? Passions? Feed with the same food? Hurt with the same weapons? Subject to the same diseases? Healed by the same means? Cooled and warmed by the same winter and summer? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? If you wrong us, shall we not revenge?
