If you look at it from another angle, this movie may be far closer to the experience of alien invasion than the Battle of Los Angeles and Independence Day.

This film has been criticized a lot, basically saying that the plot is scribbled and the camera is unstable the most, and everyone basically thinks it's okay for the special effects.
I think the perspective of the director of this film is different:
typical Hollywood sci-fi blockbusters such as the Battle of Los Angeles, Independence Day, etc., everyone who resisted the aliens still rated and recognized it because they were closer to the narrative methods we are familiar with, such as very The obvious three-act structure, with a big despair and climactic reversal at the end, brings a sense of satisfaction, and everyone agrees.
Another common feature of these films is that the characters have a growth arc and a process of change, so it's very human, like the Sergeant Major in the Battle of Los Angeles, who decided not to keep anyone.
The third feature is that the result is basically that the bad guys are killed.

But the creators of Skyline didn't think so,
1) The alien invasion is most likely to end in the destruction of human beings on Earth, and the possibility is not less than 99%
2) The process of destruction is accompanied by fierce air battles and battles of human technology, heroic, but in the end It may be invalid, so there are basically no character arcs in two days.
3) The possibility of reversal is unlikely, so don’t climax and syllogism
4) The short-term destruction process shows obvious features of fragmented events
5) There are not many advance signs and detection, so the first act is also not very true. This is also the reason why many fans say it lacks foreshadowing.

But if you think about a real alien invasion, I'd guess the experience is closer to this than the alien's ridiculous single mothership structure shoots down and destroys (Battle of Los Angeles) or aliens get hit with a human computer virus (?! Yes is ridiculous).
In fact, this category of science fiction films expresses human fears about technology and alien exploration. In this sense, this film is very successful and the ending is black. And the special effects far exceeded the budget of a film several times larger than his.

Strause Brothers likes to turn all sci-fi into lines and dramas, which are very silly youth idol SLASHER films. but! but! All kinds of alien monsters are so cute! The two brothers are considered to be more successful B-level monster directors in the CG era. The apocalyptic sci-fi sense of the scenes at the end is very retro and CULT, and the story has just begun. . . I like big bad movies more and more

Skyline quotes

  • Oliver: [to Jarrod] All right, I'll bite. What's your plan now, boss man? Because I'm dying for you to tell me.

    [pause]

    Oliver: What? Nothing to say?

Jarrod: We're sitting on the marina for christ sake!

    Oliver: I've noticed it.

Jarrod: They're hundreds of boats at the docks...

Candice: We've been through all this!

Oliver: Remind us how that worked out last time.

Jarrod: [trying to think] Well... uh... we... we'll go quietly this time. We wait until... uh... it gets a little quiet then we'll go down the back stairs and uh...

Oliver: We tiptoe to the marina... on foot in broad daylight with little cover and just search every boat until we find the right one with the key? Great plan!

Elaine: [to Jarrod] I can't believe you're even suggesting this after what happened!

Jarrod: What are you saying? What... are you saying that Terry's death was my fault? Are you blaming me for what happened?

Elaine: I was practically begging you not to go, but you and Terry wouldn't listen to me!

Jarrod: And if I had, do you really think Terry would have listened to me? Huh?

  • Elaine: Jarrod, what are you doing?

Jarrod: The only thing we can do. Making a run for it!

    Oliver: What's this really about?

Jarrod: Those things are coming for us!

Oliver: You think I haven't noticed that? You think I haven't noticed that mess under your shirt? The plan is we stay here and hold up... for good!

    Elaine: I agree!

Jarrod: You're going to let him decide everything? Look around you! We have no power. No more running water.

Elaine: Yeah, but you saw what is out there! We will not get 100 yards from this building!

Jarrod: Yeah, and I would rather take a stupid chance out there trying to make a run for it then staying up here in a 20-story target! Between those things and the radiation, we are dead up here!
