Civilization vs. Primitive

On the vast land of Africa, there are a group of tribes who have never experienced the baptism of modern civilization. They drill wood for fire, occasionally hunt, and live a primitive life entirely on nature. They share their income, eat and live together. This kind of life is peaceful, simple and happy. The harsh living conditions in the center of the desert are a gift from God to them.

On the other hand, our so-called civilized people, in this materialistic society, we are constantly pursuing, in fact, we are constantly asking for it. More and more selfish, greedy, and more troublesome. As the article said, in order to improve the living environment, people invent various tools to become more civilized, and ultimately make life more complicated. Children must spend 15 years or more in school to learn how to survive in this complex and dangerous environment.

In the film, an unshareable Coke bottle breaks the tranquility of the primitive tribe. This is a baptism of the primitive civilization. After the coke bottle led to internal quarrels among the tribe, and jealousy, the chief decided to go to the end of the world to discard this "unknown thing". The Coke bottle was discarded under the cliff, and the chief returned to the tribe happily, returning to his original happy life. But as the audience knows, the cliff is not the end of the world, and modern civilization cannot be discarded. With the first time, there will inevitably be a second and third collision.

I found out from the Internet that this bushman tribe has indeed slowly begun to modernize. Young people will use the bicycles and electrical appliances of modern society. I don’t know if this is progress or regression for them? As a modern person, I naturally cannot accept that primitive environment; but as a primitive tribe who thinks that the desert is the whole world, will modernization bring them more convenience than trouble?

Sure enough, life lies in sports. BUSHMAN has long legs and thin waists, and has a first-class figure. For a society to have pure happiness, either the whole people will be completely prosperous, or the whole people will be completely primitive. We are trying so hard to find happiness, but in fact, we have been singing innocent elegy without knowing it.

The Gods Must Be Crazy quotes

  • Narrator: They must be the most contented people in the world. They have no crime, no punishment, no violence, no laws, no police, judges, rulers or bosses. They believe that the gods put only good and useful things on the earth for them to use.

  • Narrator: Only 600 miles to the south, there's a vast city. And here you find civilized man. Civilized man refused to adapt himself to his environment; instead, he adapted his environment to suit him. So he built cities, roads, vehicles, machinery, and he put up power lines to run his labour-saving devices. But somehow he didn't know where to stop. The more he improved his surroundings to make life easier, the more complicated he made it. So now his children are sentenced to 10-15 years of school, just to learn how to survive in this complex and hazardous habitat they were born into. And civilized man, who refused to adapt to his surroundings, now finds he has to adapt and re-adapt every hour of the day to his self-created environment. For instance, if it's Monday and 7:30 comes up, you have to dis-adapt from your domestic surroundings and re-adapt yourself to an entirely different environment. 8:00 means everybody has to look busy... 10:30 says you can stop looking busy for 15 minutes. And then you have to look busy again... And so your day is chopped into pieces, and in each segment of time you adapt to a new set circumstances.

Narrator: [Kate looks for a place to have her lunch] My I share a table?

Kate Thompson: No wonder some people go off the rails a bit...

Young woman with noise in her head: Does the noise in my head bother you?

Young woman with noise in her head: No...

Kate Thompson: [Later, Kate finds Pete] Pete, Have you still got that story about the teacher shortage in Botswana?

Pete: Yeah, you gonna use it?

Kate Thompson: No. Maybe they can use me.

Narrator: But in the Kalahari, it's always Tuesday, or Thursday if you like, or Sunday. No clocks or calendars tell you to do this or that.
