In order to live, just keep going and going and going

Because I have never been, I am full of yearning and longing for that place.

But is that place really as expected?

For the kind of life that ordinary people have, and for his own inner desire, he did not hesitate to fall out with his parents and came to Bolivia in South America. Carry the little book that his uncle gave him, which symbolizes the faith in survival.

Here, he met Marcus, a Swiss teacher who came to take a vacation, and his good friend, Kevin, who had traveled almost all the beautiful scenery in South America. Of course, I also met the special gift of the god of destiny: Karl. A mysterious man who yearns for the jungle infinitely, tells the story of a very primitive and wild Indian tribe to Yossi who is also full of adventure. Primitive jungle, primitive tribe... All this stimulated Yossi's nerves. He finally persuaded Marcus and Kevin to follow the mysterious Carl and walk into the unknown primitive jungle together.

The atmosphere at the beginning is always harmonious. The beautiful scenery of the tropical jungle, the wide and peaceful river, the intertwined ancient trees, the strange birds, etc., all of which made Yossi, Kevin, and Ma, who stepped into the jungle for the first time, Kus was shocked, and Kevin kept his camera all the way, and deep down he hoped that the photos he took could really be quoted by National Geographic.

Carl alone is very calm. He doesn’t comment on all the beautiful scenery, and he doesn’t care about unknown dangers. He seems to know this jungle well, and he knows when it will rain, when is the rainy season, when will you encounter any danger, and will encounter it. What kind of danger is clear to the chest. Marcus affectionately calls him "PAPA" because Carl, like a kind old father, finds food and resists danger for the "underworld" children.

The harmonious relationship was eventually broken. Marcus's foot was seriously injured, and the wound was terrible, which severely slowed everyone's progress. After arguing, everyone finally decided to change to the waterway and built a raft. It's just that, maybe Carl is not familiar with water, maybe it's because of other reasons, after they experienced the turbulent current that almost killed them, Carl officially parted ways with them.

Kevin and Yossi did not agree to go with Marcus, and played a little trick, so Marcus finally offered to go with Karl. The four of them were harmonious on the surface and in their hearts. In fact, they had embraced, shook hands, and said goodbye in a split, and never saw each other again.

Yossi and Kevin went down the river on a homemade raft, and the beautiful scenery on both sides of the river dispelled their unhappiness. It's just that this happiness is short-lived, and the rushing water reappears. The raft hit a large rock protruding from the middle of the river.

Kevin swam to the other side and asked Yossi to throw the scimitar. Kevin repeats it over and over again, I will not leave you, I will definitely come back to rescue you. Yossi reached for a machete, but unfortunately the raft was overturned by the current. Yossi was wrapped in the water. His head hit a stone, and a lot of blood came out. Since then, he and Kevin have separated.

Yossi started his own jungle escape. Fortunately, the backpack was rushed over by the current. He picked up the backpack. The first thing he did was to find the little book that symbolized the belief in survival, as if with it, life has unlimited possibilities for survival. I also found a small bottle of pills given to him by Carl in my backpack. After eating, I felt like a superman. He was full of vitality and called Kevin to the canyon, but he didn't get any response.

He encountered various dangers, such as the threat of the jaguar and the attack of the python, all of which were repelled by his wisdom and conviction. At night, there were noisy insects all around him. After a week of living alone, Yossi, who was afraid, tired and desperately longing for human warmth, began to hallucinate.

For the first time, he saw Marcus standing not far away, calling him softly. The second time, he saw a primitive woman crying. These two people are his hallucinations. In his sleep, he repeatedly thought about the past, how to quarrel with his parents, how to gamble in Las Vegas, how to experience the gentle nephrite of a woman, and how to accept the little book his uncle gave him. These memories became the original motivation that supported him to go on and live.

Later, his foot was also seriously injured, more severe than Marcus's foot. There was a leech in the place where the brow was hit by the stone (it should be, I didn't see it clearly), he endured the pain and pulled the worm out; he was hungry, and in order to nourish and supplement his strength, I ate two bird eggs (I can’t help seeing this); I pulled out the python in a thunderous manner and smashed it to death with rocks; I drank rainwater against the mountain wall; I ate rotten ones. Fruit; in order to make the consciousness clear, keep the will, take off the shirt, accept the gnawing of the fire ants...

For 19 days, he lived alone in the jungle for 19 days. The lack of food made him extremely thin.

After being rescued, Kevin did not give up on him, and went upstream to search for Yossi. At the place where Yossi was resting, his colleagues said to turn around and persuade him to give up. Kevin couldn't find it, and stepped on the boat dejectedly. The voice awakened the dying Yossi who had lost his strength. He struggled to get up, saw Kevin, but no longer had the strength to shout. Maybe he had lost all his thoughts and gave up completely in his heart. At this moment, Kevin turned his head and found Yossi who was black and extremely thin on the bank of the river.

The people in the village affectionately referred to Yossi as "the man who came with God's guidance."

Jungle quotes

  • Yossi Ghinsberg: I told my parents I'd be back in a year, but I don't think I'm ever going back.

  • Karl: This is the last frontier on earth. Still alive, still wild. Not for long. We don't like wild. We don't like untamed. We're obsessed with control. So, we ruin the whole planet, and pride ourselves for creating stupid national parks with stupid rangers in stupid hats to protect what's already gone. Why? Cause we're scared. The jungle shows us what we really are. We're nothing. We're a joke. God fucked up.
