When Eva felt guilty for Mr. Toole’s death, Elam said to Eva: "Mr. Toole’s death is not to blame for her, he himself ended himself with a cowardly act." Eva said, "No, everyone does. There is a limit to withstand, and fate is too unfair to him." Elam said, "No, fate is not fair to anyone, should you be ill-fated? But have you ever thought of committing suicide? Like him." Eva shook his head'No'. "No, because you are strong. The children in your stomach will also be strong."-Elam's last sentence is the best summary of how people survived that era.
