Basically, it does not constitute any plot. This is an advantage of Half Nelson, it is not funny. The film itself has a bit of documentary. The two people met and developed naturally. There was neither interaction nor dramatic communication. Everything was business as usual. On the contrary, people who watch it will feel that there should be some development...such as mutual rescue...but the plot is very restrained to stop this imagination.
These make Half Nelson look otherworldly. There are also some very leveraging methods that make Half Nelson appear clever, which deserves the attention of producers who are committed to independent films.
Pan. Hand-held photography, shaking lens, inaccurate focus, shooting a subjective lens that easily shows the character's mentality. The photography itself is not surprising, but it will be effective if it can be used appropriately. In Half Nelson, Pan Jing and Ryan Gosling's superb performance complement each other, and the inaction of a drug addict is very vivid. Dan hides in the toilet, takes drugs, finds a woman, gets drunk and attacks at night, the last party, a series of unreasonable behavior scenes all express the chaos.
implicit. A simple expression like Half Nelson is not used much in American movies. There are so many narratives in the film that there is no end to the point, there is no special meaning to prompt the development of the plot, and the reasons for certain conditions are rarely explained. Most of the details require the audience to think freely, and the conclusions drawn are not fixed. This is a bit like the expression of a European art film, except that it has a strong taste of life and is not deliberately complicated.
Dan's life is basically a "waste" based on our current social standards. It's not efficient to have ideas and don't want to make progress. Ryan Gosling's performance is very good, making this character reasonable and worthy of sympathy more than hateful. Half Nelson's very restrained expressions also made this character look a little more pitiful, and his life of waste does not need to be explained~~~~
The plot is good. Just as what attracted me in the first place, it was also applauded in the end. When most people thought that a story about being angels to each other was about to be staged, and a friendship that was known to each other in adversity was about to blossom and bear fruit, the two protagonists of the film chose to fall apart. The teacher was eventually fired, and ended up with a farce like carnival. The black girl went straight to help drug trafficking, and the resistance was only psychological. Two people who didn't know what kind of tomorrow did not respond to "tomorrow" until the end. It is understandable that both people maintain a wise attitude and continue to act unreasonably.
This is the most basic meaning of Half Nelson. Some people have chosen a path that we despise. It is not all because of the bleak life or the failure of education. Sometimes, they are sober and even have good reasons. The fall does not take shape overnight, nor can it be saved by an angel.
Half Nelson is documentary most of the time. At the end, there is a bit of drama in the hotel, but this climax is very charming, enough to cover up the coincidence of the plot.
