"Dumplings": The Destroy of Humanity in the Inside; The Last Mile of Urban Middle-aged Emotions (Text: Vulcan Ji)

Watching this movie reminds me of the "Human Meat Char Siu Bao of the Eight Immortals Restaurant" many years ago. It's also a story of cannibalism. The difference is that in the story many years ago, it was made of barbecued pork buns, and now it is made of dumplings. If we say that "Eight Immortals Hotel" is just an accidental murder and an accidental extreme handling of corpses, it is just a bloody violent aesthetic. Dumpling, then, undoubtedly treats the same thing as a human choice. People who eat buns do not know that the stuffing they eat is made of human flesh. But people who eat dumplings know what they are eating and still eat them. Obviously, there is a deeper human sadness involved. Heart of beauty in everyone. But shouldn't it be the same as the principle that a gentleman loves money in a proper way? When the love of beauty surpasses the so-called Tao, in the final analysis, it is the ultimate shattering of the urban emotional myth. The film tells the difficult years of the Li couple's youth from a very side angle. Now it's a success. But it is clear that the wife is no happier than the previous difficult years. Emotions are getting colder. Plus middle-aged without children. rich. Indifferent husband. A woman who has passed away longs to find her husband's heart. Even if he is no longer young. Not as understanding and young and beautiful as her husband's lover. Therefore, a very extreme way was used to recover the youth of the past. Yang Qianhua once said in an interview with the media that this is a tragedy movie, not a horror movie. Indeed, emotionally speaking, the tone of the film is pathetic. But. In my opinion, this film seems to be more of a dehumanization of humanity. Or, to a certain extent, this is also a kind of tragedy.

The characters in this movie seem to have their grand reasons. No one is clearly wrong. Except for the beastly incestuous father. And this daughter, who was raped by her father and became pregnant and eventually had an abortion and lost too much blood, seemed very innocent. The husband cheated just to have a child to inherit the family business; the wife ate the dumplings made from the fetus to regain her husband's favor; Aunt Mei existed because there was such a market need... and so on. But the more grandiose. The more it makes one feel desolate and sad. The ultimate annihilation of human nature lies in the part where Yang Qianhua finally induced the child in her stomach to make dumplings to eat. After all, tiger poison does not eat its children, but when a person can even eat his unborn child, it is beyond the scope of tragedy. This is a movie to be applauded. I never thought that Hong Kong could make a movie that pays attention to human nature and digs out such profound problems.

The movie uses a lot of space to depict the close-up of Yang Qianhua eating dumplings. From the beginning of trembling, to the later of course. From the cold sweat on the neck at the beginning, to the induction of labor by myself and the staring at the ceiling with wide eyes and gulps of my unborn child. This process itself is a process of degeneration and degeneration of human nature. And the constantly repeating song "The waves of Honghu Lake..." suddenly pulled us from the endless and beautiful water township of Honghu Lake to a dark, damp and filthy kitchen. There is a strong contrast here. A contrast that makes us nauseous. And the close-up of devouring dumplings and that ambiguous sound. It also completely subverted our calm mind.

Years fly by. Youth is constantly being wasted. If there really is such a formula for recovering those things that have disappeared, maybe no one can calmly control their emotions, and no one can resist such temptation. As Aunt Mei said, when eating, think about the consequences, not the antecedents. And even if you know the antecedent, perhaps, people will still be completely lost before the temptation of rejuvenation.

When the red high-heeled shoes quietly sneaked into the kitchen to peep, the cause was already in front of him. However, apart from the nausea at the beginning, he still sat at the table with peace of mind, eating dumplings with his heels tilted. Still the same pair of heels. Who said, don't think about the antecedents. It's just that everything seems to have its own destiny in the midst of the cause and effect. In the final analysis, it's just that people's hearts are immortal, and greed is immortal. I thought while watching the movie. If the husband in the movie hadn't had an affair, and if the Li family had a harmonious relationship, wouldn't all this happen? But I suddenly remembered the scene where my husband and Aunt Mei had crazy sex, and I was completely disappointed. As I recall, that husband also had a bowl of dumplings. Whenever I watch this movie, I always have a day without dumplings. Looking nauseated. 2006-3-30; the second day of March in the Bingxu year. Dumplings quotes

  • Mei, the cook: Let me tell you, all expensive cosmetics claim to contain precious stuff like bird's nest, ginseng, pearl powder, pollen, royal jelly, whatever. Who cares? For women to rejuvenate, you must start from inside for the best result. Only my secret formula can do this. Mrs. Li, think of the results, not what it was.

  • Mei, the cook: [singing] Rough is the nature of Lake Hung / My home is on the shore / At dawn, boats go out with nets / At dusk, they return loaded with fish / Wild ducks and lotus roots are here / The scent of rice fills our autumn air / They say heaven is beautiful / How can it compare with my Lake Hung?
