Book vs Movie

3.5. The text itself is so much better than the movie. As a fan of the original book (previously used by readers of online novels); I had high expectations for this film. "War and Peace" is the pinnacle of Russian literature and one of the pinnacles of world literature; I finished reading it in the summer of 2020, reread it many times in the future, took reading notes, and listed it as my "2020 Reading" One of my favorite books I've ever read." Having said so many digressions, it's time to get to the point; watching this full seven-hour movie is a challenge and an enjoyment. This is the second Russian film I've seen; Russian literature, only Russia (or the Soviet Union) can make it. After watching the movie, my state of mind is half disappointment and half satisfaction; disappointment is because the movie is far worse than the book, and satisfaction is to finally see those grand scenes written by Tolstoy. "War and Peace" books and movies should all be included in the "great" category.

My favorite episode 4, Pierre Bezukhov, I call it "Moscow on Fire"; it's my favorite part of the book as well.

The third episode, "1812," had the worst look; skipped a few minutes, my sin, the movie itself didn't perform very well in this episode.

Tolstoy talked about a lot of philosophical and ideological issues in the book, and the film only showed a small part; and it was through narration.

In the book, Pierre, Kutuzov and other characters have complex psychological struggles and clear growth curves; it cannot be said that there is no such thing in the film, but the character of Kutuzov does not stand at all, and many of his Psychological descriptions are not shown at all.

Of course, it's impossible for a movie to show a long line of Toon's argument at the end of the book; I can't read it, but I know it will work in the future.

In the future, I will have to find time to reread War and Peace; I can read it together with the movie, but it must be watched in sections, so be careful.

War and Peace quotes

  • Field Marshal Kutuzov: Advisers, advisers. There are always plenty of advisors. But not enough real men.

  • Field Marshal Kutuzov: Everything moves too fast. Nothing is accomplished in haste. It's easy to take a fortress, but hard to win a campaign. That requires patience and time.
