Laughter erases fear

But what is scary about laughter? Laughter erases fear, and without fear, there can be no faith. Because there is no fear of demons, there is no need for God. "It's not your conceit, the pride of your stubborn wisdom, that once caused the conflict between you and Bernardo!" "If you insist on yourself and conflict with Bernardo, the emperor will not be able to save you." "Learn to restrain you. Wisdom, cry for my lord’s pain! And don’t think about those books anymore." "Mice like parchment more than scholars" "Try to think, use your mind instead of your mood." "My My heart is full of sorrow, but I have no reason to oppose the fair judgment of the Inquisition." Are you willing to abandon the devil and believe in Christ? It's better to die faster than to stay in jail for the rest of your life. The demon I want to abandon is you, Bernardo!

Everything about the rose of yesteryear was in its name, but all we have now is a name

The adaptation is very mediocre. The grand religious debate in the original book is greatly compressed and replaced by magnified secular feelings. The religious struggle in the Middle Ages has been diluted, and a few perfunctory sentences are not linked to the cause of the case, which is simply fragmented. Even the suspenseful feeling is weakened by not giving the answer implicitly from the beginning.

The Name of the Rose quotes

  • William of Baskerville: I too was an Inquisitor, but in the early days, when the Inquisition strove to guide, not to punish. And once I had to preside at a trial of a man whose only crime was to have translated a Greek book that conflicted with the Holy Scriptures. Bernardo Gui wanted him condemned as a heretic; I - acquitted the man. Then Bernardo Gui accused *me* of heresy, for having defended him. I appealed to the Pope. I - I was put in prison, tortured, and... and I recanted.

Adso of Melk: What happened then?

William of Baskerville: The man was burned at the stake and I am still alive.

  • William of Baskerville: The only evidence I see of the antichrist here is everyones desire to see him at work.
