Not for the superficial you, really

When I was in college, my "Linguistics" teacher left me the deepest impression not of any professional theory such as "Speech Act Theory", but her first class in Shandong dialect similar to Henan dialect to all English. More than 100 people in 4 classes of the department said: "I hope everyone can become a person with depth." Then, I used Hemingway's iceberg theory to explain to our group of diaosi who have just been liberated from high school what depth is. .

Obviously, language leaves only a trace. Some people may really understand it, but some people just laugh it off, some people forget the pain when the scar is healed, some people turn it into a label and stick it on their forehead, some people, such as me, vaguely feel that they have missed a very good one. Theory of X.

And I'll never really understand what "depth" is, and it's even harder to be a "deep person."

Some movies are really drowsy. But it's rated high enough that everyone raved about its goodness. Maybe this is the "depth" that I can't go to. I may have guessed the "central idea" it wants to express, but most of this guess is wrong, and in this kind of straightforward narrative of the story, I have no intention to dive in, I just want to climb back to the top of the iceberg and return to the sea to breathe. Such as this "there will be blood".

1. Some people think that the translation of "the blood will come" is not good, and they prefer "blood and black gold". In fact, I think the original English name is quite religious. "God said, let there be light, so there is light." This blood is coming, which should be what it means.

2. There is no dialogue for a lot of time in the film, and the music is very monotonous and dull. I really think this kind of treatment is awesome, but I really feel that I have no idea other than "this reflects the emptiness of the story characters' hearts and the barrenness of the real environment" and so on. The protagonist said the first line after 9 minutes. When I saw 100 minutes, I really couldn't help but watch the length of the film but saw the sad "158 minutes". I couldn't help but fast-forward when the priest finally came to the protagonist's nonsense. I know that waste wood will die, but I can't wait.

3. After reading it, I feel that the protagonist's life is very exciting and very sad. But I also understand that this movie is too difficult, and the 158 minutes of my life that have been lost will never come back.

The protagonist is almost as crazy as Nietzsche, God is dead, religion is useless, it is better to make money

From the perspective of ugliness of human nature, the two people are different in the same way. One experienced a false church baptism and then sank into the black gold to be further twisted; the other completely aroused the hypocritical darkness in the oil mud pool, and finally lay in the blood of Jesus. "I am finished." The last line contains a lot of meaning. The scenes of blowout, church exorcism, father and son break, and final confrontation were shocked. Both DDL and Dano are great. The soundtrack is magical and the image captures people.

There Will Be Blood quotes

  • Plainview: Mr. Bankside, I'm not going to waste your time; I'd certainly appreciate it if you didn't waste mine. Now, if you wish to sign with me, we can have a well drilling within ten days, but your lot is further north from the discovery well up here, and so... Well, that means we'll probably have to dig deeper. And if there's as much oil here as I think there is, it'll be harder to reach, but once we find it, we can take it right out. You have to act quickly, because very soon these fields will be dry. Now... I need you to know what you want to do. Now, because of the distance from the discovery well, I'll pay you a smaller royalty than you'd get down there, but I'm prepared to give you a thousand dollar bonus on your lot.

Mr. Bankside: What kind of royalty are you talking about?

Plainview: 1/6th, plus a guarantee to start drilling within ten days. Now, that's something you won't find anywhere else.

    [long silence]

Plainview: What age your children, ma'am?

Mrs. Bankside: 10 and 12. Mr. Plainview, a question, sir. Where is your wife?

Plainview: She died in childbirth, Mrs. Bankside, so I... so... Well, it's just me and my son now.

  • Paul Sunday: Mr. Plainview?

    Plainview: Yes?

Paul Sunday: Are you Daniel Plainview?

Plainview: Yes. What can I do for you?

Paul Sunday: You look for oil.

    Plainview: That's right.

Paul Sunday: What do you pay for a place that has it?

    Plainview: Well, that depends.

Paul Sunday: What does it depend on?

Plainview: On a lot of things.

Paul Sunday: If I told you I knew a place that had oil, where land could be bought cheaply, what do you think that would be worth?

Plainview: Oh, I think that, uh... you should let me know what you know, and, uh, and then we'll try and work something out.

Paul Sunday: Can I sit down?

    Plainview: Please.

Paul Sunday: [Paul sits] What church do you belong to?

Plainview: I, um... I enjoy all faiths. I don't belong to one church in particular. I... I like them all. I like everything. Where are you from?

Paul Sunday: That would be telling you. That's what I want to sell you.

Plainview: What are you doing in Signal Hill?

Paul Sunday: We have oil and it seeps through the ground. Do you want to pay me to know where it is...

Plainview: Well, just because there's something on the ground doesn't mean there's anything beneath it.

Paul Sunday: Why did Standard Oil buy up land?

    Plainview: Is it in California?

    Paul Sunday: Maybe.

Plainview: How much land they buy?

Paul Sunday: I'd like it better if you didn't think I was stupid.
