It turned out to be like this at night

Yes, you can say that this is a noir film, or a horror film. But such a statement will only devalue the value of this masterpiece. As a noir film, it lacks the typical femme fatale image, and the plot arrangement and problem solving are too naive. As a horror movie, it obviously lacks the visual rendering and psychological stimulation of a typical horror movie.

(But perhaps because of this, its alternative blackness and horror are more refreshing.)

It is indeed difficult to classify, and it may be more appropriate to call it a religious movie, a Bible movie or a Christmas movie. Both the characters and the story can be supported by the Old and New Testaments. The two little brothers and sisters repeated the escape of Jesus and the rescue of Moses in the river. The plausible evil false preacher is no different from Satan on earth. The old lady appeared as a virgin and guardian angel on earth.

The film's photography miraculously captures the tranquility of the night over God's creation, and the horrible atmosphere that seeps like drops of water. It turned out to be like this at night. This is a great movie about the night.

After a night of sin, a night of hunting, a night of escape, and a night of fright, the film reasonably ended on Christmas night. Hosanna!

The combination of expressionist photography composition and such a black crime story that combines elements of innocence, religion, adventure, suspense and other genres was indeed unusual enough at the time. Robert Mitchum calmly created a very pure but complex villain in film history.

The moment the Children's Hanging Song begins, the film's nightmarish magnetism is doomed. Until the end, the images of the "dead father" and the "priest" in the boy's eyes overlapped, and the banknotes fell out of the rag doll's body. The film has been crushing the audience's nerves with Freudian symbols. The work of a masterful contemplative.

The Night of the Hunter quotes

  • Rev. Harry Powell: [when he notices John staring at the words "love" and "hate" tattooed across his knuckles] Ah, little lad, you're staring at my fingers. Would you like me to tell you the little story of right-hand/left-hand? The story of good and evil? H-A-T-E! It was with this left hand that old brother Cain struck the blow that laid his brother low. L-O-V-E! You see these fingers, dear hearts? These fingers has veins that run straight to the soul of man. The right hand, friends, the hand of love. Now watch, and I'll show you the story of life. Those fingers, dear hearts, is always a-warring and a-tugging, one agin t'other. Now watch 'em! Old brother left hand, left hand he's a fighting, and it looks like love's a goner. But wait a minute! Hot dog, love's a winning! Yessirree! It's love that's won, and old left hand hate is down for the count!
