In 2005, director Shin Ake shot a short film version of "9". This grotesque animation was widely acclaimed once it was launched, and also won him the Best Short Film Award at the International Student Film Festival.

After watching the short film "9", director Tim Burton wanted Shin Aker to expand the film to a longer film. He copied the DVD of the film to producer Jim Limley. After watching the film, Jim was deeply moved. Three days later, he found Shin Ake and asked him to expand the plot and prepare the script for the feature film.

The crew had a lot of trouble on finding who to dub 9. In the original short film, 9 did not speak, so everyone has no final conclusion on how to express the voice of 9 in the feature film. Shin Ake has nothing to do about it, because he doesn't know what tone or accent 9 should have, and it happens that he knows Elijah Wood.

As a cartoon, this film has been done well enough, I don't understand why the majority of fans and critics don't buy it. The 9 robot puppets represent the 9 personalities of the scientist. I prefer No. 5, although he only has one eye.
