To me, it's the best film ever. Calm and clear development of the main line, calm characterization. Violence as a timeless film theme has never been more attractive to me, and a person's duality has never been so adeptly changing and constantly changing in reality. From the common man to a tough killer, there is only a thin line, and Cronenberg expresses the slender state of this "line" so movingly and so cleverly.

See, violence is also a way to solve problems, otherwise, you won't have the peaceful life you want. Just used violent hands, stained with dirty blood, the once clean past has become history. Neither Tom nor Joey can escape the entanglement of nightmares, those pasts that can never be washed away, can only use the most primitive violence to end it all. The choice of a middle-aged man is not like the rebirth of a phoenix after Nirvana.

Tom Stall: What the hell were you thinking?
Jack Stall: I wasn't thinking.
Tom Stall: Obviously not.

[Mr. Fogarty threatens Tom to come with him back to Philadelphia]
Tom Stall: I told you, I have never been to Philadelphia!
Carl Fogarty: [chuckles] Wow. You sound like you really believe your own crap, don't you? You know, you're trying so hard to be this other guy. It's painful to watch.
