To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom, North Korean National Television recently aired the British film "Bend It Like Beckham", which was the first Western film to appear on North Korean television.
The film "Bend It Like Beckham" is directed by the British Indian female director Chada, starring Keira Knightley and Palminde Nagra. It tells about an Indian British woman who is obsessed with football and adores football star David. Beckham finally broke the shackles of racial concepts and pursued the story of his longing for life. The broadcast of the film on North Korean television was jointly facilitated by the two countries’ officials. During the film’s broadcast, North Korean television also deliberately put out subtitles, saying that this broadcast was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between North Korea and the United Kingdom. Peter Hughes, the British ambassador to North Korea who watched the film on TV in Pyongyang, said that although the film is based on football, it also has many connotations such as multiculturalism, equality and tolerance.
