In order to put Sommers' sea monsters on the big screen, the producer invited the special effects makeup artist Rob Burting, who won the Oscar for "Universe Veyron". When the first draft of the design was released, the visual effects director Michael Hee led the special effects specialists from Dream Vision to take over. The company used more than 120 technicians to create special effects for several months, and the model department alone consisted of 50 people. In order to design the actions and predation habits of the sea monsters, the animation technicians studied a large number of marine creatures such as blood-sucking squids.
While creating the sea monster image, the model department of Xunmeng Imaging completed two large-scale passenger ship models in three months. The model used to take pictures of the sea is 38 feet long. There is a miniature lifeboat model on the deck, and even the rust on the anchor is clearly visible. In order to light up the entire hull, the model department used a total of 1,000 miniature light bulbs; another model It is 110 feet long and is used to film the explosion scene of a passenger ship. In order to create a shipwreck effect, the hull uses a steel exposed frame structure. The construction of this frame alone requires 2500 pounds of steel, 10,000 feet of wood, hundreds of plywood and resin-plated glass.
