The film records the journey of Werner Herzog and the crew to Antarctica to film local creatures, residents, and unique geographical features. This documentary is not a film about the famous penguins in Antarctica, but to explore the human life in Antarctica and the magnificent and magical beauty of Antarctica. They went to the McMurdo Station on Ross Island, the largest scientific research center in Antarctica, operated by the National Science Foundation's Antarctic Program Department, to film, and interviewed some local people who provided support in operations, logistics, IT, and maintenance. After the members, they went to the seal bases, diving camps and other places where humans camped in Antarctica. They met many interesting people along the way. They did a lot of work including cell biologist Samuel Bowser and zoologists. Brief interviews with Jan Pawlowski, penguin scholar David Ainley, etc. To a certain extent, what they are shooting and exploring is not to show the field of scientific research, but to reveal a unique life experience to the public   .

Encounters at the End of the World quotes

  • Werner Herzog: For this and many other reasons, our presence on this planet does not seem to be sustainable. Our technical civilization makes us particularly vulnerable. There is talk all over the scientific community about climate change. Many of them agree, the end of human life on this earth is assured. Human life is part of an endless chain of catastrophies, the demise of the dinosaurs being just one of these events. We seem to be next.

  • Werner Herzog: As if we had wanted to leave one remnant of our presence on this planet, they would find a frozen sturgeon mysteriously hidden away beneath the mathematically precise true south pole. They stash it back away into its frozen shrine for another eternity.
