The film’s creative inspiration can be traced back to director Steven Spielberg when he was 14 years old. After his parents divorced, he imagined an alien friend to accompany him; in 1978, he announced that he would shoot in 28 days. For an autobiographical film called "Growing Up", even though the plan was shelved due to the postponement of the filming of "1941", Spielberg never gave up this idea. The director also considered conceiving a follow-up to "The Third Type of Contact", and teamed up with John Sells to prepare a dark film called "", which tells about the threat of evil aliens. The story of a family. During the filming of "Indiana Jones" in Tunisia, creative ideas about childhood memories once again occupied his mind; so he revealed the cancelled "Night Sky" to the screenwriter Melissa Matheson, and conceived some minor plots. For example, Buddy, the only friendly alien, became friends with a lonely child, and the scene of Buddy being abandoned on the earth in the end inspired the film's creative inspiration. Matheson completed the first draft of the script in 8 weeks, called "ETand Me", after which it was revised twice.
